Our family has been eating from this restaurant for many many years and have only had a disappointing meal on a couple of occasions. I have tried other local Chinese with friends but prefer this to all others in the price range. We always order the mini spring rolls and could happily fill up on just those but I usually end up with the combination satay (Chinese style, they do Satay sticks as well which are quite good... What User doesn't like about Tropical Restaurant:
You don't expect much from a suburban Chinese but there are better ones than this. I was in a large group who all agreed the food was too salty. Service was unsmiling and aimed at rushing us out. I was nearly elbowed in the face as the waitress dived in to remove plates before they were quite finished. As a vego I know Chinese isn't a great choice but I planned to take veggies off shared dishes to add to my rice. Wel... View all feedback.
The food is great. The restaurant is an icon, having been trading for many years with the same management.
Only tried the combination laksa take-away and it was the most bland, ordinary, average laksa I have ever had in my life.
I like restaurants without the fancy decor and serving fine food is more important. My wife and family have been enjoying food here for over thirty five years and cannot remember a bad meal. Our favourites are Entrees Short Soup and Mixed Entree, mains, Braised King Prawns with Chilli sauce, Spicey Chilli Prawns, Combination Flat Rice Noodles, Pepper Fillet Chicken, love the people and the food
Informal place; flawless, intuitive service. These people care that you enjoy delicious, fresh flavours, perfectly cooked.
Definately not worth trying We had a craving for old style Aussie Chinese dishes. We found this place had those dishes like sweet and sour pork and lemon chicken on the menu so we decided to try it. The San Choi Bau was bland and tasteless, the lemon chicken came as deep fried chicken on a plate with crispy batter (like fish and chips) that was fine. The sauce however (that came separately) smelt like chemical dishwashing liquid and was watery we sent it back. We also had beef rendang that was brisket with a cayenne based sauce it was horrible. Not going back... Ever!
