The place is under new ownership and is renovated, immacutely clean with most importantly, delicious food. The chips are insanely good well seasoned, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Fish is also very moreish with a tasty and unique batter that I haven't had elsewhere. Service is always polite and well mannered. Honestly one of the best fish and chips shop I've visited in recent years. View all feedback.
What Samantha Hassler doesn't like about Flake Out:
Sorry to say that this was the worst fish and chips I have ever had. The couple running it are lovely, but the food was inedible. Frozen battered fish was soggy, old oil made the dim sims dark brown and taste odd, chips and potato cakes so soggy and undercooked. Won't order again. View all feedback.
I haven’t had old school fish and chips for too long. So it was time to give it a go. This shop has a new recent owner and the shop is now bright, spotlessly clean and the food great quality. I ordered a Dinner by the Yarra which was 2 fish, 4 calamari rings, 2 South Melbourne Dim Sims, (pork and beef), large chips and 2 potato cakes. I had BIG eyes and the food was cooked fresh and the service was excellent. The new owner was friendly, polite and he told me that he is new going to produce a new menu in September which will have chicken wings and drumsticks, and new vegetarian burgers. The fish was good, really tasty. The rest of the food was also really tasty, hot crispy and not greasy. But the best part was the South Melbourne Dim Sims. If you haven’t tried these you have to give them a go. The ones I had were crispy on the outside, and the filling was perfect! My bad, I forgot to take photos of the extras so I’ll go have to go back lol Overall this is a good place to visit with easy parking on Victoria Street. FYI the photos on Zomato are really outdated.
Was obviously having fryer issues at the time. Oil was not hot enough so both fish and chips came out warm and soggy even after waiting 25+ minutes.
Oil wasn't hot enough so after waiting a long time the fish was under cooked, calamari rings were soggy as were the chips. Ordered the South Melbourne pack because I wanted a Dim Sim and it was missing from the order. I believe they were aware of the issue as there was a problem with the order before mine with missing food they couldn't cook due to oil, also continued to take orders while I was waiting. Ate a few chips and a bite of the fish before throwing the pack out, not recommended.
Best I've had in Melbourne. I grew up in fish and chip shops and am a very hard man to impress. Nice Flake, great batter, reasonably recently changed oil.
