This it what I've been looking for!Moved to Ivanhoe a few weeks ago, and have been checking out the local spots. Mostly, I've been a bit underwhelmed - but I had high expectations of this place, based on what a couple of friends have told me.Finally got around to giving The Foreigner a go today and it's everything I hoped for. Staff are great, food is great and the coffee - thankfully, is great too.Found what I've be... View all feedback.
What User doesn't like about The Foreigner:
Came for an afternoon snack..found the menu limited for GF food...chose a salad that should have been an embarrassment to the person who slapped it together.and it tasted terrible... Couldn't get any attention for service..price was exorbitant and wasn't worth my breath to explain why I didn't eat the salad...there are so many reputable places who actually care about what they serve...Foreigner needs to find out what... Friendly caffe, nice layout. limited vegan options, but nice eating. cheaply located next to the washroom for Sunday morning wash prep for the week.
Had the “Excuse me, I’m vegan” Buddha shelves. excellent! also very decent coffee.
I met a friend here for lunch on Sunday. the caffe was busy, but not overcrowded and we sat comfortably at the community table. we started with a coffee, and there were milk of the pasture that is not common in melbourne. I was torn what to order: the falafel 18 saw the most interesting, but because I had recently falafel, I went for the smashed avo 16.50 . that was quite good, with a decent amount of avocado, mushrooms and a beestock hummus, which was not sick sweet. but they did not bother to replace the feta, which was slightly annoying. still no bad lunch. I'll try the falafel next time in the afterbarity.
We visited for lunch today at 1.15pm. The owner reluctantly seated us and said they closed at 2pm which we understood to mean the kitchen, with 45 mins to order eat we sat down. Waited for our order to be taken, the. Waited almost 30:minutes, for cafe food! With a number of people still in the cafe and us having just received our food the owner and staff started packing up, putting chairs on tables around us. Talk about feel unwelcome! When making payment, they asked how was our meal. I replied I felt rushed and under pressure. The owner was very RUDE suggesting it my choice to ‘sit down’. Clearly they don’t value their customers. Owner ARROGANT RUDE. Will never return after way we were treated. Plenty of other options in Ivanhoe. Go elsewhere.
We loved our brunch experience here. I had the coconut porridge and my partner had the granola. Both were exceptional in every way. So beautifully presented and composed and superbly flavoured. We shared half a ham, cheese and tomato toastie and loved that as well. Our coffees were absolute crackers as well. Service throughout was efficient and genuinely warm and friendly. Conclusion: the Foreigner is an excellent cafe. We will be back.
