Oberkrainer is a restaurant on the 2d floor (American designation) of a building. The restaurant's interior is quaint and it also has a large terrace for dining outside. The view from there of the Mariakappelle and Hauptmarkt is excellent. We had lunch, including wine, for only 34 euros. So the place is inexpensive and its food is nevertheless very good. What Wulf Scholz doesn't like about Oberkrainer am Hauptmarkt:
Went to Oberkrainer last nite with a business colleague, for the second time this year.Inside is like time would have stopped in 1965. It still amazes me the pictures that decorate the set of stairs, where you can see some of the destruction that Nürnberg suffered after the bombing in WWII.Food is ok. I had the Schweinfilet mit Pfifferlinge (Pork filet with Chanterelles) which was ok. Nothing extraordinary, just hone... View all feedback.
We walked up the stairs to the restaurant and got a table on the terrace overlooking the square. We split a nice salad and ordered veal schnitzel and beef stroganoff. The food was good and so was the bottle of Vranec from Montenegro. The waiter was pleasant and it was a nice dinner.
This is right on the Marketplatz, so we expected it to be a tourist trap, especially during the Christmas Market. My family loved all of the dishes, and I especially loved the spaetzle. The service was fast as they are likely motivated to get tourists in and out. The upper deck outside of the restaurant is a great place to take a photo with a view of the market.
Highly recommend. On the immediate outskirts of the Christmas market, but quite a small restaurant that you walk up stairs to, and not touristy. The wait staff were very friendly. I had the schnitzel and it was fantastic. The sausages were wonderful with sauerkraut and the 3 year old had about 4-5. Bavarian is not my favourite cuisine in the world, and coupled with a highly tourist area surrounding the Christmas markets, it is hard to find a good restaurant, but this was a rare gem.
We came in for late afternoon coffee and drinks after spending time in the Christmas market. By the audible sigh our waitress made, you would have thought we personally insulted her. We considered leaving, but stayed and everything was incredibly average. Save your money and go somewhere with less attitude.
We ate there twice as the pork steak was wonderful. The family that ran the restaurant were very nice people. We had beer the first time and shared a wonderful Riesling the second time. We could say enough about Grandmother, who was always coming by and asking how things were. We sat and the bar both times and the bartenders were very accommodating to us, despite pouring drinks for those sitting at tables. I would recommend this place because the balcony overlooks the center square, where currently the Christmas market is being held. A great photo op.
