"Years ago I attended an event at the Inn and really was impressed. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I was tasked with finding a location for a small gathering. Since a few members of our party have serious food allergies I was careful to try to find a place that could accommodate these issues. I remembered my previous meal so I looked the restaurant up. The Old Richmond Inn’s website indicated that they could work with allergies and a subsequent phone call to the restaurant resulted in a verbal confirmation that they could handle the allergy issues and that there should be no concerns. Relieved to have found a place for everyone in our group I booked our reservation. Sadly, the event itself was a mess and didn’t live up the the promises I had been given. The waitress for our event was clearly not trained in dealing with food allergies and also obviously didn’t take them seriously. Multiple serious issues occurred during our meal. Among the most egregious was when one plate, ordered to be gluten free, had to be sent back because it had been covered with gluten containing garnish. It was returned to the table showing signs that it was clearly the same plate and the garnish had just been scraped off. This left gluten crumbs still on the food. I suppose that management would try to claim that they state on the gluten free menu that cross contamination may occur. My complaint isn’t for off-hand accidental cross contamination but rather about the complete lack of any clear attempt to honor the things we were told before arriving or to take these concerns seriously once our party was seated. A different member of our group was also served a plate clearly containing things to which she was allergic (and which she had been clear to discuss with the waitress at the time of ordering). Her replacement came late in our meal and although she only ate a small amount of it she got sick. As for the remainder of our party the general consensus seemed to be that the food was fair but nothing overly special and probably not worth the price. The service was definitely below what would be expected in such a place and was really pretty poor. Nothing stands out from the meal. It was just average. A game that started to be played among some of the members of the party who ordered steaks was comparing doneness. There was no consistency at all. A medium well steak had more red than a medium rare one for instance. All in all I can’t recommend this restaurant over any of the various chain locations you could find in Richmond. The menu might be more extensive but the quality isn’t better and the service is possibly worse. I think I can safely say that no one in our party ever plans on returning and I know of at least one couple who were excited to find a nicer place they could eat that would cater to one of the spouse’s allergy. The Old Richmond Inn definitely lost out on future business because of the poor experience our group had."
