San Blas Social Club

Great spot where expats seem to congregate, i'm guessing mostly from Canada. The food is fresh and tasty and i'll bring my hub and our friends tonight for the steak I've heard about. I had the caesar with big fat juicy shrimp that were still a bit warm from roasting. Perfect! The rooms looked good, too. Tiny,simple, and clean. Bed was good and the johns are spotless. Perfect. I'll be back next winter for a few weeks and will book in advance. I needed a break from the local fare and it was wifi and people friendly. Hit the spot.

A watering hole/eatery on the west side of the plaza that lives up to it's name. George, the bartender on duty, introduced me to almost every patron (a cool mix of older expats, younger travelers and locals). SBSC is dog friendly, jazz and blues friendly, smoker friendly, budget friendly, even friendly to the street performers who would occasionally pop in trolling for tips ...just plain friendly. There are 8 or 9 bar-stools around the L-shaped bar which is short enough to prime conversations yet long enough for elbow room. Tables on the patio out back and a small dining room off to the side complete the setup. Tho I was more thirsty than hungry I was still able to sample one of the highly regarded menu items, a wonderfully crusty and perfectly seasoned marlin cake with mango sauce when a beautiful girl sitting on an adjacent bar stool insisted I try a bite of her dinner. Yes, that really happened. Did I say friendly yet? Augustin, the owner, and Phil, the Chef, were hipsters and historians who were fun to talk to and kept the vibe simmering. Great place to cool your heels, wet your tonsils or extinguish your hunger. I'm looking forward to my next visit.

The San Blas Social club is an institution and should not be missed.Propping up the bar are salty locals and long term expats who will regale you with local info and gossip in equal part.Phil the chef raises the tone with an excellent menu that changes regularly but his piece de resistance is the Marlin Fish Cakes.The Martinis are great too.

Our friend stayed behind for two days while we went exploring the wild Pacific and scouted out the bars and restaurants in town so that we would be well prepared to eat and drink when we returned. She settle on this place as her absolute favourite! She tried the food and drinks many, many times in the two days alone to be sure she got it right. It is possible that the alcohol could have affected her judgement and tastebuds and I was a bit concerned, but it turns out that she had been able to keep her wits about her for the most part and made a fine choice. The place is fairly new, well appointed, and quite attractive with all english speaking staff (leading to a 100% gringo clientele). The owner is a transplanted Brooklyn restauranteur who has lived in Mexico for many years. We went for dinner and had a couple of drinks first and now I can't remember exactly what I ordered or what anyone else ordered (except our scout's husband who had a big steak- I remember as that was a very common dinner meal for him- very Mexican I must say). Anyway, everything was good and we all left well satisfied and happy. The prices are reasonable, if a little bit higher than some of the other places in town- well worth it, however. Additionally, they rent out a few hotel style rooms upstairs very reasonably.
