The Grey Thornbury

The Grey is literally a 5 minute walk from our front door and we were so looking forward to the opening after watching the renovations progress. We booked online which went very smoothly and we were seated promptly at our reservation time. The restaurant was completely full and rather loud for our liking, (opening weekend excitement possibly? it was hard to hold a conversation without shouting! Perhaps the addition of some sound baffles on the ceiling might help? We found the menu selection was quite small and overall on the expensive side. Most entries were $25-30 and didn?t include sides. We felt particularly that they could have done with a few more appetizers and some ?specials? to supplement. A nice soup would?ve been welcome for example. My husband and I both had salads to start which were very tasty but $17 each. I then had the whole Trout which was delicious and perfectly prepared but my husband had the chicken which was bland and very undercooked so he couldn?t eat it. The manager was very professional and did remove it from the bill and was very apologetic but it rather spoiled the meal. Given that this is their first weekend we?ve put this down to opening night mishaps and will give them a few months to settle down and try eating there again. Hopefully we will have a better experience next time.
