"Climbing the last kilometres up to one of Italian’s prototype Renaissance towns, the road is flanked by agriturismo ventures. This is the one to seek out. It’s relatively easy to spot from the main road and there’s plenty of parking. Antonio is front of house, Erika behind and when we were there, we saw nobody else (although we were puzzled if that were even possible when such good food was being served to about 3 dozen having big lunches) Interior dining space is a series of cranks and perches so you and our party ended up in a little booth like area where we naturally feel uninhibited. Add the fact that Antonio is like your favourite uncle cheering your choices and it quickly goes from restaurant meal to lunch party at your friends’. Great hearty food lots of relatively simple dishes like griddled cheese ‘fonduta’ with a range of toppings like chestnut honey, lardo, truffle which caused howls of excitement and lip smacking among our party. Then superb local fare like wild boar ragu on bici. Top hit was a tomato salad that surely came from the gardens with tomatoes that weren’t ‘ripe’ red but had huge depth of flavour underlined by lovely oil. We thought they were Heritage but couldn’t translate. Meal ends with Antonio slapping an armful of Vin Santo and digestivi on your table along with cantucci asking which coffee you want to dip them in. Days later, back in London, we were wondering how long it would be before we ate that well for that little…"
