My brother-in-law, who knows Trieste well, took my wife and me on a beautiful 4-hours hike from Opicina to Basovizza through the Karst Plateau. Halfway we stopped at the village of Gropada, very close to the borders with Slovenia, for a lunch at the local agriturismo Picko (a Slovene family name).
