"9/9/20 We three middle aged London guys were on our last evening in this fortnight in Istria and flying our from Trieste. We had met up with a friend from London who had returned back home to settle in a place with a better quality of life. He had known this restaurant since he was a kid and wanted to show us it for our last proper meal. He had to book the table, even on a Wednesday. He sent me the TA link so I could research into it. It looked impressive and he We arrived at 19:55 and my friends checked the menu board outside. I went in to meet our friend and his friend inside. The restaurant was busy with locals and most tables filled. As this place is a bar/hosteria too there were a few people at high tables and outside just drinking. After our 2km walk up and over a hill via an ATM we were not sure if it took cards and my friend said they only spoke Italian we needed a drink first. The big sign over the bar had a list of local and other wines as single glasses €1.5 or litres Malvasija and Teran €4.50+ . We were surprised at the low cost for a carafe but as we were not in the centre we thought it appropriate. We had had good 'open ' wine in Croatia for £8 11 a litre . We do not speak Italian so assumed these were the prices. As we sat down the waitress gave us a food menu each and it was quite extensive. As we three were pescatarians the options looked interesting! Our friend said they knew how to cook properly. Around the walls were pictures from the three generations of the family which ran the osteria/trattoria, as well as newspaper reviews. The waitress and barman were busy so it took a little while to grab their attentions to order just the wine. Eventually a litre of Malvasija arrived, our friend 's friend 's half finished Spritze being whisked away we noticed a minute later, he was not happy! . The wine was good and I could concentrate on choosing. As this was a seafood restaurant I was in heaven but with no sea view . We were not quite sure if the splitting payment arrangements with our friend he had been buying rounds the evening before and this was a much more expensive menu than we were used to in Croatia as we use TA to find good value meals!! . I was confused about the Italian eating regime of starters, anti pasta, prima piati etc.... after advice from my friend and our local friend I gave up and just asked my friend to order a variety of meals. He wanted the Gnocchi with Cheese, Butter and Sage 8 but I though 'Busera ' style Langoustines 12 would be more appropriate and better value. My friend is a good cook and can create that cheesy dish anytime, but the Busera was something special albeit €12 so worth ordering. After conflicting advice I just chose the Eggplant Parmesan 7 first course and a Mixed Shellfish Soup 14 as a starter and told my friend to order whatever to share. He chose a the Gnochi Langoustines Busera style and our friend an Oversize Spaghetti with Clams and Jumbo Shrimp 12 . Our local friends chose a few seafood dishes. We toasted at 20:21, chatted and relaxed in anticipation of the feast to come! The food arrived after a while at 20:42, as it was obviously all cooked from fresh, although one seemed to arrive in a weird order. The Fried Squid 10, a 'Secondo ' arrived first to our local friend so my confusion of order protocol was confirmed! My Mixed Soup with Mussels, Clams and Razorshells came in a saucepan and I dived into it, getting very sticky and having to ask for a tissue napkin I did not realise one was included in the cutlery packet . As well as the original basket of sliced fresh bread there appeared a basket, solely for me, of toasted bread too which our local friend insisted that I used to mop up the liqor after the seafood was eaten and shells discarded. I did just that with the 'soup '. The original bread was charged later as the €1 'cover charge ' which I saw on the bill later. This was different from Croatia, no problem. It is a long time since I have dined in Eataly. My friend and our local friend had the Mixed Gratinee 14 and they looked generous and fabulous. At last my friend had a proper 'Coquilles Saint Jacques ', after a couple of alternative Croatian alternatives , he found it baking hot and very tasty, just right! It was our local friend 's favourite too so he tucked in too. As our friend had not chosen a starter we shared a few of these shellfish which were delicious. After getting quite messy mopping up the 'soup ' I popped to the loo to clean up and noticed the old style squat toilets in the gents. Wow! This place is traditional!! I returned to find the wine depleted so another litre of Malvasija was ordered. Conversation continued including our local friends with other friendly drinking locals. At 21:34 my Eggplant and Parmesan arrived, quite a generous portion and it proved to be hot and delicious! Almost like a cross between a lasagne and a moussaka but no meat . I shared some with my friends. I am continuing to write this review on the plane home and am trying to match pictures with dishes, with the bill too. All very confusing as they were delivered seemingly at random and we were quite merry with Malvasija! My friend 's Busera Style Langoustines and Gnochi were very well presented, piping hot, spicy and delicious! There were not many gnochi weirdly but the generous langoustines made up for it and the tasty sauce. Our friend 's oversize Spaghetti with Mussels and Jumbo Prawns was delicious he said and we shared a few, he was very protective over the fresh home made pasta the best he had had all two weeks ! Lots of mopping up the bowls resulted in clean plates for the waitress to take away! By then we also wanted another litre of wine to share and the local Friuliano looked appealing. We decided a proper bottle might be a bit too late in the day and expensive 16 24 on another list above the door as we were quite merry and JC was not the host. Someone then pointed out that the list over the bar described the litre figures as takeaway prices 'A Porto '. As there was no other wine menu issued or displayed I asked the waiter how much it might be and he exclaimed 'thousands of lira ' as a joke said then corrected himself by saying 'double ' he did speak much English . Ok the local wine was going to be €6 9 each litre, fair enough and still a good price. I chose a Friuliano oldTokaj to try it out as different from the Malvazija. It proved a good wine again and went down well between us. At the end of the delicious savoury dishes our local friends suggested desert. I was very full and tired so abstained. I also had no idea of the prices as none written or provided we are on budgets on holidays so this was a treat . My friend decided on a Tiramisu to share between us three as recommended and it arrived along with another and tart at about 22:00, presented in a glass box and looking unlike any Tiramisu I have seen! It was mostly Marscapone sauce. Our local friend explained how it was made in general. It was creamy and delicious, not alcoholic at all though. It turned out to be €4 on the bill. At the end we decided to have a shot of liquer or spirits. I asked for Nocino walnut liquer of Istria in general but they had none, so two grappas and three herby grappas Prime Uve apparently the best were ordered 2.5 each and along came tiny shots of each. They were good though! At about 22:30 we ordered the bill and it arrived printed as €170.50 excluding service. This is what our local friend had predicted the day before when we arranged the meal. He decided it was easiest to split the bill so my friend did the calculations, we took their cash and paid by card, leaving a 10 tip, although our local friend said it was not compulsory. We left, around 22:50, sated and happy after good food, wine and conversation. Off we went to Hop and Rock bar in the centre behind the big General Assurance building. Back in the apartment and on the plane home I have been trying to figure out the bill after I cannot find anything in the menu for €7. They may also have missed off a big bottle of Slovenian Radenska frizzante water no price provided which is apparently very good tonic for hangovers! On examining the bill in the apartment it turned out the wine was actually all €10 a litre! Our friend was not happy as he felt tricked and mislead. There was no indication of the 'drink in ' price anywhere. Maybe the bottled wines were also takeaway prices? It was still a reasonable price for a litre but it is the principle of displaying prices properly. Given the waiter said 'double ' this was actually almost triple for the Malvesia! We three were not happy in the end and I was told to include this in the review and knock a star off. Everything was so much more transparent in Croatia! Despite our local friend 's 25 years loyalty to the restaurant we seemed to have been overcharged. If I had picked it up earlier we would not have left that tip the biggest of our whole holiday as was the actual bill and meal cost after splitting . Maybe we were being taken advantage of? It is a good place with great food and no doubt cheaper than those in the centre we had no chance to dine out previous evening as drinking too much! . Maybe it was just the shock after Croatian prices which are not necessarily cheap . The bill needs to be more detailed as they were in Croatia as the generalisation primo, antipasta, etc. is confusing for us foreigners!"
