This place is nothing to look at but the fact that the place was full of people (mostly Asian) spoke for itself. The lady that helped us was very knowledgeable and helped us make decisions as we ordered and she really knew what she was talking about. The portions were generous, prices fare, and the food delicious. View all feedback.
What Shez G doesn't like about Gain Wah Restaurant:
In mid- August, a guy in our building recommended Gain Wah to us and since he was of Chinese heritage, we gave his recommendation a lot of credibility. There were four of us and we ordered 10 dishes with the rice and noodles included. None of the dishes, not the shrimp, beef, chicken, mushrooms nor other vegetable dishes was memorable or rave- worthy. We were all disappointed. View all feedback.
Still closed, probably still recovering from the fire. I don't know why Google says it is open. I prefer this place over New Town Restaurant for hot, cooked food because of the portion size, affordability, and taste.
My favourite Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. Really good service and food. Hope you get recovered and I'll definitely revisit when you reopen.
The 5 star rating is to help them recover from a fire over the weekend. Hope they are up and running again soon for everyone's sake, especially the displaced residents of the SRO above them.

Where to eat Chinese food when it 's getting late...Gain Wah since they close at 11 daily except Mon. The menu is extensive and the service super friendly. Seems like Covid hit them and everyone hard, so they 're only doing takeout which was fine for us. Parking was easy on street and just ignore the few locals hanging around with music, pets and some oddities. The regulars were popping in for food, sodas and the like, so it really felt like a part of the community. The owners were super friendly and food was good. The fish filet with vegetables (add extra buck for gai lan) over rice was flavorful and good amount of white fish. The roast pork char sui was real good in the wonton noodle soup. But the soup base was disappointing. Egg rolls were a bit greasy. So I 'd say it really depends on what you order but the food was good overall just not awesome. The reviews on yelp and google really varies and I feel some of the negativity was inward. Again, it was a great option when it got late where your choices are more limited. Sorry no pics 'cause we were too hungry. Enjoy!
