"My family and I visited Marybrooke Manor for my birthday several weeks ago, as we were looking for somewhere special to spend the afternoon having a High Tea. The setting of the Manor is beautiful, and we enjoyed the drive there and looking at the...beautiful gardens, and we arrived at the restaurant with high expectations. We were, however, extremely disappointed with our experience of the afternoon. We were shown to our table in the restaurant, amongst the diners there for a Sunday pub type lunch, and were then left alone for 10 15 minutes without an explanation of how the afternoon would unfold or what we could expect. After sitting and waiting for this time, we eventually found a waitress to clarify when our food would be coming and how to get our drinks etc. What followed was a series of minor events that in total, equated to a not overly enjoyable dining experience. Firstly, the drinks, rather than being brought to your table, were self serve from a buffet style table of several different varieties of tea. All other drinks were at an additional cost. The tea itself was lovely, however there was no hot water or milk with the tea bags. Instead of this being brought to the table promptly, every time we required hot water we needed to head to the bar to try and find a waitress to fetch a jug of boiling water for us. This was also the case with the milk. Often, there was not enough milk or hot water for all of us at one time, and so we would need to return for more. The hot water was also not freshly boiled and had clearly been left sitting in the jug for some time, meaning our cups of tea were lukewarm, and we had to return the jug to ask for boiling water. Secondly, the table itself was not cleared for us. As each cup of tea required a new tea bag for each of us, the clutter on the table quickly built up. We only had one saucer to put our used tea bags on, and this quickly filled up. On several occasions, we had to take this saucer ourselves over to the bar to remove it from the table, and to ask for another one to put the next lot of used tea bags on. At one point, we couldn 't find anyone and simply had to stack the tea bags on the table, and ate with the used tea bags surrounding us. The food itself was also somewhat of a disappointment and it certainly wasn 't up to the standard we were hoping for. From our table, we were in close proximity to several other parties who were dining in the restaurant, and it was apparent that they were not enjoying themselves and believed the food and service to be below par. Both parties spoke to the waitresses serving, and we could hear them discussing their disappointment amongst themselves, and one pair even came to ask us if we were enjoying our afternoon, as they thought the service we were receiving was not acceptable. We sympathised with both waitresses, as they were extremely busy sharing the service of the whole restaurant between the two of them for the afternoon, and understand other staff were setting up for a wedding in another room. The waitresses were both extremely friendly and polite, however they simply had too many people to provide the service justice for everyone in the restaurant. Two waitresses simply were not enough for the restaurant. The waitress we spoke to about our concerns at the end of the afternoon was very understanding and took on board our feedback. Having been lucky enough to have had quite a few High Tea experiences in the last few years, I feel it is not only the food but the whole dining experience being waited on, enjoying leisurely cups of tea and not needing to lift a finger for the afternoon as your food and drinks come out that makes a High Tea what it is. Unfortunately, I feel that Marybrooke Manor missed the point of the whole afternoon tea experience, and simply provided the food and drinks for the afternoon. Whilst we were able to see the 'Fawlty Towers esque ' humour of the situation and therefore still managed to enjoy ourselves, I felt disappointed for my Mum, who had spent time trying to find a special place for the family to enjoy my birthday. I would happily accept and expect an experience like this for 20 or even up to 25 dollars per person, however we all felt that at 40 dollars per head, the quality of the food and service we received was not up to standard, and we did not at all receive value for money. I would be expecting a real treat for that price, and to be well looked after by the staff. I feel this experience was much better suited to something of a lower price, where I would be happier to serve myself and play a more active role in the afternoon, and to be seated amongst people there for a pub lunch. I do believe there is potential for this to be a lovely experience given the picturesque setting, however I would not recommend visiting here for an afternoon tea based on the experience we had there. Of the dozen or so High Teas I have experienced, this was easily my least enjoyable."
