Schober Alm - Zell am See

Location is beautiful, but the chef must have been having a bad day.The Grösti, Fried potatoes with Sunnyside up egg on top was very dry, tasteless and instead of mixed Bacon bits according to the menu, it was shredded beef. The Kaiseshaum was also dry, tasteless, overcooked, tasted like it came out of a box, definitely homemade. All portions were small,that's OK. My guests neither said good or bad about their dishes. They raved earlier about how good the Austrian food they've had so far, this time they were quiet. We didn't complain, as I would usually if the food was bad because my American friends from London had so much catching up to do and I didn't want to make experience negative. I chose it because it is alm, location for the atmosphere. And the reviewers LIKED the food. I've lived two years in Austria and two years in Germany to know what good cooking is about.I was very disappointed . The atmosphere was great, but if the food is bad, then even a nice view and nice atmosphere don't make up for it. The server was pleasant, place looked clean, no complaints there. But never again. I'll have to try other alm restaurants and definitely not bring out of town guests here.

This restaurant serves excellent Austrian mountain food and drink. The view of the lake and mountains from the dining room and terrace is breathtaking .

This has always been a lovely place for a drink - very traditional inside and great views outside, but the food used to be dire. I don't know if it's changed owners, but we had lunch here the other day, and it was really good. We only had snacks, so I can't vouch for it as a dinner venue, but they were all delicious - excellent home-made bread and very tasty local ham and cheese. It's also very dog and child-friendly and perfectly positioned for lots of lovely walks.
