Bread: whether black or white, whole grain, multigrain or ciabatta, the choice is almost infinite
If a country stood for food, Germany could be embodied by a loaf of bread. No nation has so many different varieties and types as the Germans. In total there are even 3200 different kinds of bread in Germany. The UNESCO has declared this diversity as a world cultural heritage.
Bake, bake, bread
Bread is basically divided into acidified and unacidified types. The difference lies in the preparation. Acidified bread is produced with the help of raising agents such as sourdough or yeast. This leads to a loose consistency of the bread. In contrast, unleavened bread is produced without these leavening agents. An example of unleavened bread is flat bread.
In addition to the general method of production, the bread is also distinguished by its ingredients. For example, the type of flour and flour type plays a role: spelt, wheat, rye or other grains, as well as whole grain or extract flour. In addition, the addition of other ingredients such as sunflower or pumpkin seeds can also be a differentiation.
A special feature of German bread types is, besides their variety, the hard crust of the bread. This makes them unique in a certain way - if you disregard baguette and ciabatta.
Despite the great variety of bread types, the most consumed type of bread in Germany is a simple mixed bread made of rye and wheat flour. In Bavaria, one can almost speak of the fact that the lye pastry varieties are more dominant. On the other hand, in the Mediterranean region, one consumes rather pure white bread, i.e. wheat bread. The best known are probably the baguette and croissant in France or the flat bread in Turkey.
Snack and more?
Obviously, one eats bread with a hearty snack - as the name already says. But not only in the bread basket (optionally also in the morning or at noon) fresh or also processed bread makes something.
Just as obviously, bread plays a role in a sandwich, baguettes, rolls or a kebab. Pizza bread, naan bread and pita bread also have the word "bread" in their names. Besides Bruschetta plays straight in the Italian kitchen a large role and thus also the Baguette.
If you like salad, you've certainly come across bread as a side dish at one time or another. But also, the croutons were once bread in their original form.
If we are talking about processed bread, bread dumplings or pretzel dumplings are a nice example and also a nice possibility to process old and already dry bread.
Bread can also be a treat for sweet tooth. Be it as a carrot - yes, it is also available without a whip - or as French toast. Both are not only associated with bread, but also really delicious.
Of course, these are all just examples and by far not everything that can be conjured out of bread. But I think that even this small collection of delicacies - at least for me - makes your mouth water.
