"Every weekend I cycle past the tiresome East Vancouver hipsters waiting in line at trendy Nice Cafe and The Wallflower. Instead, I head to this locals' secret brunch spot. Formerly the Rhizome Cafe, new managers at Heartwood have kept all the ingredients in place: bright, cozy atmosphere; huge mugs of coffee, healthy twists on egg dishes; and lots of heart. nOh, and look up for a peek at the unusual (for Vancouver) stamped-tin ceiling tiles.My favourite is the eggs benedict: poached eggs on homemade cornbread slathered with a bright squash sauce, a big pile of salad, and pan-fried potatos. You can also go Mexi with the chilaquiles, or west coast with a smoked salmon omelette. And yes, they have bacon.The attitude is utterly all-inclusive: everyone is welcome--straight, queer, vegan, meat eater, activist, tourist. You eat local, and you're treated like a local. I usually go for brunch, but drop by in the evening for a poetry slam, a $5.00 glass of wine, or a local brew."

"We arrived for brunch and were seated on the patio which usually has a wonderful view but, alas, the forest fire smoke obliterated that to the point that fog-horns were being used! On the upside, the haze brought down the temperature. Although a local, this was the first time I've eaten here - the prices looked over the top for dinner so I thought brunch would be do-able. The service was somewhat unprofessional - drinks being plunked down with spillage in the general area of the recipient with lots of reaching past other patrons. When my crab benny arrived I had to lift the eggs to search for the crab and bacon - it was almost non-existent. Very disappointing. The accompanying salad was delicious with nuts and feta. Some people in my group, including myself, found the food to be nearly cold, so I was quick to eat my eggs before the salad! It really wasn't worth the $25 charged for a benny, coffee and service charge. Obviously people come for the location - too bad the food and service aren't up to par."

"We had lunch at Troll's while we waited for the ferry. Very friendly staff told us about the ferry ride to come and the logistics. Food was delicious. I'm not a Fish n Chips expert by any means, but this is the best I have ever had (including around the U.K) The fish (cod) was delicious and fresh, and the batter was perfect, with a hint of vinegar (and not very greasy.) My kids had burgers and said they were great as well."

"Gruesomely overpriced for the quality AND quantity of food served from the menu. Tortellini were decent, but the so called whole portion should definitely be larger than fitting into the palm of my hand for $22 price tag (for take-out). Potentially decent pesto chicken pasta was dominated by overflowing amount of olive oil and due to that became inedible. Pizzas displayed in the window were unmarked (that shouldn 't be too much of a task, specially that most of the traffic these days is walk-in) and we had to ask for the clarification of the ingredients for most of them, that had veggies and/or various meats on them. We asked for a cajun-chicken one, which was the last slice on the tray, and got one with corn and bacon only! Nothing like what we saw in the window when ordering. With the tip the bill ended up to $77 for two miserable portions of pasta, 4 slices (2 per portion) of pizza and 3 bottles of flavoured sparkling water. I 've been to NYC many times, ate well and not so much, but this name puts a stain on anything New York. Sorry, this customer and two other people who ate with me will not be returning customers, although we live and hike in the area."

"I recently went to White Spot for lunch with my friend. My lunch was a dissapointment (first time ever) but must say I was very impressed with the Park Royal Service Manager as he not only emailed me but followed up with a phone call. The Manager apologized, offered an explanation and mailed me a gift certificate. One could not get better service anywhere.....well done."

"Say what you will about Tojo's and the Nobu restaurant chain, this place is simply the best around. I travel a lot. I have had the great fortune to visit Japan over 25 times. My review recomndation is, that you visit Zen and try this. don't order. Just let the sushi chef take care of you. Nobu (chef, not the restaurant) is a genius. Say no more."
