"We were in Costa Maya for one day on a cruise ship. We took the town bus (its called a shuttle)to the Mahahaul beach which is actually the edge of their town. Get off at the 1st stop. You will see Señor Frogs- don't eat there. Turn right on the boardwalk and walk down to the building with all the colorful flags blowing in the breeze. This is Kimbara Caribbean Cantina. We ordered quesadillas and fish tacos. Order one of each because the cabbage salad comes with the quesadilla and the pico de gallo comes with the tacos and they are both fresh and delicious. After we ate we walked back to Senior Frogs and hired a snorkel boat from Emile. His two men took us out to the reef in his little skiff for $30 a piece. We saw the cruise ship excursion guests on another skiff and they payed $69 a piece and were crammed 20 to a boat. We had our own boat. The snorkeling was great, lots of colorful fish swimming in schools, unique coral. After our snorkel we hired massages on the beach for $25 for 30 min. We walked along the boardwalk and shopped from the vendors but the good shopping was back in the area around the cruise ship dock. We had a wonderful time at this beach. We took a cab back to the ship for $2 a piece. We could see the ship from Mahahaul beach all day and felt safe that we would be able to return in time to make the ships departure deadline. Don't pay for a ship snorkel excursion in Costa Maya. Do it yourself."

"Of course I am a local here, known Mahahual since before Hurricane Dean in 2007. It's always changing and online information often quickly becomes out of date. Tony's Pizza is known to be open evenings only for locals. Angie has the cutest little beach area completely private and unique as she has cute plants all around and beautiful mangrove trees out front. A really very special site in our town. I definitely suggest stopping to enjoy a little hidden gem."

"La ubicación de Macho's Bar es buena para efectuar una caminata por el malecón de Mahahual.Cuenta con su bar en la planta baja y con un área exterior que tiene vista a la playa, donde pueden cocinar un típico pescado zarandeado o bien hacer una barbacoa de algún producto del mar.Se encuentra al costado derecho de un muelle que sí es utilizado aunque el flujo de barcas y yates no es alarmante, sin embargo hay que tener en cuenta porque en esas zonas el mar normalmente tiende a estar contaminado por la liberación de desechos de las embarcaciones.Cuando estuve ahí ocupé parte de la zona de camping pero también hay habitaciones que se deben reservar.Tiene regaderas y baños en la planta baja, cerca del bar y su playa es pequeña. Puede mejorar en el mantenimiento de las instalaciones pues los propietarios de comercios que colindan con el mar tienen la obligación de limpiar la playa. Para mi desgracia el día que fui la playa no estaba limpia y había un fuerte olor a materia orgánica en descomposición, específicamente algas y es semejante al olor del azufre.El crecimiento de esas algas era suficiente para impedir el paso al mar y darle un color a hierro oxidado.La gente encargada se portó bien, en general pero no esperes tener la más cálida de las atenciones.Los muebles del bar son de madera y cuentan con algunas sillas de ratán al que hay que dar mantenimiento.En aquella ocasión por estar en verano pero aún no tener tantos clientes (éramos al menos 50) el bar a veces abría por el día y por la noche lo hacía pero de una manera que no llamaba la atención. No es un lugar para ingerir alimentos más que los que se pueden cocinar en el asador de la playa. Realmente sólo es para tragos.No hay alquiler o préstamo de sombras así que deberás pedir una, sin embargo a lo largo de la playa de Mahahual existen mejores opciones."

"We were happy to use a private little chained off area of the beach "for hotel guests." The numerous vendors do not bother you too much in here either. This section of the beach didn't seem to get hit quite as badly with the sea grass, although someone kept working to clean it up. There had been a storm out at sea and the beach was inundated all over Majahual. There is a long pier adjacent to the property and we enjoyed walking out to look at the fish, and the occasional fisherman. The restrooms are clean and there is an outdoor shower. We had a good lunch of conchinita tacos! A little bit pricier than other local places, but also seemed a bit classier too. This end of town isnt as crowded. We may stay here on our next visit."
