"Although this restaurant is named “Pizzeria Trattoria San Marco” it is not a genuine Italian restaurant, i.e. a restaurant run by native Italians. Actually, its proprietors originate from the Balkans as can be gathered from the restaurant's website. But this should not make any difference provided the kitchen staff is really familiar with Italian cuisine. The focus of the menu is on pasta and pizza, not on more exceptional Italian dishes, let alone the cuisine of certain Italian regions. When I arrived there for a very late lunch on a rainy working day I was surprised for two reasons. First, while the pedestrian precinct where “San Marco” is situated was deserted, the restaurant was half full. This place seems to be popular among locals. Second, seeing its plain outside one would not expect such a large and cozy restaurant. The interior is rustic, features some bare brick walls and large wooden girders. The furniture is also made of wood. From the first moment I felt comfortable there. But this comfort was somewhat spoiled later when the separation of the smokers and the non-smokers areas turned out to be insufficient. Dependent on whether the entrance and/or the back door were open the smell and smoke of cigarettes was sucked from time to time into the non-smokers area. Since it was already late for having lunch I chose a pizza in the hope that it would be prepared rapidly. Indeed, a sizeable pizza was served after only a fairly short waiting time. Service was swift, but indifferent and not particularly friendly. My mild and polite criticism at the end that the pizza, although on the whole quite good, suffered from too much salt in its dough (or at least in parts of it) was simply ignored by the waiter. Prices were quite low in view of the nice ambiance. All in all, a restaurant of mainstream Italian cuisine whose principal attraction, however, seems to be its marvelous décor."

"“Gasthof Niki” had moved only recently to this new location. Though rather small, this restaurant is separated by a glass wall into a smokers’ and a nonsmokers’ area. It is modern but not stylish and its interior does not stand out in any respect.It classifies its cuisine as Adriatic, which according to the menu comprises grilled meat from the Balkans, fish and seafood. It is unclear whether the more than a dozen variants of pizza on the menu are also considered to belong to the Adriatic cuisine. However, more popular with the guests seemed to be the many kinds of ‘Schnitzel’; their choice being so comprehensive that it is rivalled only by few other restaurants. On the other hand, there was not even a single vegetable main course on the menu.The staff was attentive and waiting times were quite short. While portions were generally large, this applied in particular to various sorts of ‘Schnitzel’. They covered almost the entire plates on which they were served. In view of these portion sizes, prices were fair; some of them even a bargain.Basically, our main courses tasted fine and the mixed salads deserved special praise. On the other hand, ready-made frozen vegetables were served as a side dish and we received greasy calamari that had evidently been fried in a pan, although according to the menu they should have been grilled."

"I chose the tagliatelle with chanterelles. Was extremely good. The staff was very accommodating even though it was very busy. I liked that there is supposed to be a four day week. Considering the staff crossing a busy street to serve on the terrace means one day less safety hazard on duty. I found it particularly nice that I had a direct view of a few neophytes from my seat. A rare sight. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5"
