"The Boss Restaurant in Metrotown has been on my radar since its opening in 1999. My then teenage brain thought it looked pretty and resembled the modern look that was further improved in 2009 with good food. In addition, I remember seeing a lineup from the door, what I was another good sign. Admittedly, such argumentation is obviously erroneous, but it has worked in another case in this shopping center (Fortune House, RIP). Well, I think I would have written more attention on the various reviews online. The great majority seems to float with an “average” rating that does not alert me. But I guess the devil is in the details. The Boss Restaurant has received some critical comments from the likes of Foodology, Gastrofork and the ChowTimes (written between 2008-12, but nothing new. ‘Next to Zellers’ is no longer calculated. I guess you could say ol’ PookyCake is a little behind the times here as I'm currently applying this facility. Nevertheless, the gist of her commentary that raised the average kitchen was a lot of precursors for my visit. I was all hyped to try FINALLY The boss, but after all, I wish I was dined elsewhere. Now a little more context: My partner and I had spent the better part of an afternoon shopping in Metrotown. We have previously decided that instead of traveling far and yonder, why not just dine in the mall for comfort? I saw this as the perfect opportunity to suggest The Boss Restaurant, suggesting that I have been curious for some time. After I checked out some reviews and went through the menu, my partner agreed. We arrived shortly before 18:30. The restaurant was moderately busy, but we immediately got a stand. After reviewing the extensive menu (which we reached with smartphone technology, I ordered the Shanghai Chow Mein while my partner got the Lemongrass pork chop with steamed rice. The food came very fast – under 10 minutes. My Chow mine did not look very exciting and contained nothing more than a few tidbits of chickens and scanned green onions, but I hoped that all flavors would be there. Oh, how wrong I was. The noodles were completely tasteless and left me to lift my eyebrow. Seriously, how could this high-quality HK-style kitchen last so long in Metrotown? I had better quality noodles in postage-stamp-big cities. My partner's Lemongrass pork chop was only slightly better. It was served with a little steamed rice, shredded salad, a tomato slice and some fish sauce for diving. The pork chop was thin, but delicate and, unlike my Shanghai noodles, had at least some taste. As such, it became the highlight of the dinner by default. A short comment on Service: In short, it was practically not present. After we were set and our orders were taken over, we did not see our server again. Usually, servers will come at least once to see how everything is. After tasting and experiencing bad quality served at The Boss, we can understand why she didn't check in with us. If I were in her shoes, I would not; FOOD: 2/5 SERVICE: 2/5 VALUE: 3/5 RECOMMENDATION: Well, at least my curiosity was cured. We're probably not gonna eat here again. The food is cheap in price, but also in quality. Heck, even Pennyandrustys mostly excellent photography could not save this place. To avoid recommendation. "Will be back again. The specialty 'ko shui ji ' (meaning delicious chicken) is yummy. it looks like hainanese chicken with dark soy sauce and chilii. they also have many other dishes with lots of sauces and flavor. the restaurant is really small though so be patient to wait for seat at lunch. will go back again."

"Great little spot in Burnaby. We come there every week for lunch. Lunch specials are REALLY BIG and VERY REASONABLE. The dining room is simple and functional. I would not go there with my business partner or my wife for dinner but with a bunch of guys to fill up the tummy this place is perfect."

"We visited Double One because a group of our friends insisted upon a Chinese dinner in North Burnaby. Today's evening repast was quite enjoyable and only cost $22 per person (2 tables of 10 persons each.) Our dinner arrived promptly (too promptly because the entrees arrived before we could finish our soup.) Overall it was a very enjoyable dinner."
