"My husband and I decided to go ahead and try this spot even though the Yelp reviews were pretty brutal. We made this decision because the food looked pretty good in the pictures and we live right next to Occoquan. Our expectations were set really low so we were hoping to find a gem where we could count on basic food and a quick, close dinner spot. Here are my observations: It 's very confusing to try and figure out which door you are supposed to use to enter the building. We decided on the door at the top of the little set of stairs. I suppose this was the correct door as there was a counter inside. We noticed right away that the place was empty and that there were MANY dirty tables which had not been cleaned since patrons had departed. There was a single patron in a tie-dyed t-shirt sitting at a table near the front. We were taken outside on the back deck to be seated (we requested outdoor seating since the inside was a ghost town and sort of stuffy . Again, outside, there were several dirty tables. Our waiter was very friendly but speed of service was extremely slow. We both ordered starter salads before our meals... these took 30 minutes to arrive at our table and the salads had been washed to order and were soaking wet with water. There was no attempt made to dry the lettuce whatsoever. I was starving and ate my salad anyway but my husband couldn 't make it past a few bites. He described the experience as slimy . Our meals arrived shortly thereafter. Unfortunately the waiter didn 't take away any of the plates/saucers we had finished with so when the food arrived everything was very cramped. I got a cheeseburger and fries and the hubs got a steak and baked potato. He said the steak had a good flavor but to me the whole plate with the steak and veggies looked very soggy and sloppy. Presentation of condiments is super sloppy. Not really a strike but definitely didn 't help the rating either. I had asked for mayo on my burger but my burger had no mayo when it was delivered. I asked for a side of mayo and the waiter remembered and went to retrieve it. It took a solid 10 minutes to get my mayo. In the meantime, I had pretty much polished off my french fries out of sheer starvation... so that by the time the mayo arrived for the burger, I really didn 't have any appetite left. (I can almost never finish a burger and fries but I usually sacrifice my fries since they are the cheapest part of the meal . In this case, I forced myself to eat half of the burger and took the other half home for the dog. The burger had a good flavor and was cooked properly. Upon departing, I noticed the same patron in the tie-dyed t-shirt was still sitting inside in the exact same spot. My husband and I had been here close to 2 hours at this point. Not sure if this patron was a regular (I did not observe food or beverage in front of them at either glimpse or if this was simply one of the waitstaff 's buddies or bf/gf just hanging out for their entire shift. Personally, I don 't think it 's a good look either way. Also worth noting that our waiter could be seen/heard smoking right behind the back deck (so literally about 8 feet directly below us . So the whole time we were sitting there thinking is it really taking 25 minutes to get a salad? he could be seen directly below us. Additionally, the smell of cigarette smoke was very pungent being right above their chosen smoking area. I don 't really mind the smell personally, but fair warning to anyone who might find it offensive. Final thoughts: The food here is good. Not great, but good. It 's basic food but sometimes basic food is what I 'm craving. (In my opinion, this place has the menu that Madigans SHOULD have. Unfortunately, despite the food being good, there were ample points of detraction that led to an overall disappointment in the experience, even considering that we visited with pretty low expectations to begin with. So set your expectations low, avoid the salad, and pray for a different server. For the record, my husband and I don 't believe in any gratuity under 20% and we sort of live by the mantra that we should tack on a few extra dollars (even above 20% because those few dollars don 't mean much to us but they can mean the world to a waiter. (We both hail from the service/hospitality industry . So I don 't want anyone to think we stiffed the dude simply because he smoked more than he waited on our table. It was a slow night, and you almost always get worse service during slower periods. I saw on their website that they do have a Sunday brunch buffet for $12.95/pp. It 's probably worth revisiting to check out the brunch buffet simply because I feel many of these negative factors could be avoided if I were to serve myself brunch at my own pace. If we do choose to patronize once again and attempt sunday brunch, I will update my review specifically for that experience."
