"FOOD TYPE
Italian

FOOD QUALITY
My wife and I dined here on a chilly Saturday night in early June. We kicked things off with a refreshing VB ($7) and a bottle of crispy sparkling white wine ($9). We’re both partial to sparkling white wine so I always prefer it when they bring us a bottle rather than simply a glass. For entrees, we ordered a serve of bruschetta bread ($6) and a rocket salad ($13). The bruschetta was nicely presented on colourful blue dish. The toppings were ripe and fresh, but unfortunately the edges of the toast were burned, which marred what was otherwise a pleasant and tasty way to start. The rocket salad was wholesome and nutritious with lashing of the green stuff, topped off with pine nuts and a sharp, tangy dressing that tasted a bit like “Thousand Islands”. For mains, we played it safe with spag bol for me ($17) and penne arrabiata ($17) for my wife. Neither dishes disappointed. My spag was soft and chewy and the meat was beautifully cooked to perfection with a slightly spicy flavour to liven it up a bit. The arrabiata was similarly spicy and well cooked. Serving sizes were just right, and they left no room for dessert!

ATMOSPHERE
This location has seen more Italian restaurants than I’ve had breakfasts. My own memory goes back to “Old Castile” during the noughties, which was a rather dreary place with a moody and unfriendly maitre d. That only lasted a few years and was replaced by a joint called “Made in Naples”, which offered so many freebies and “eat as much as you can for $20” deals that it eventually folded. The next incarnation was “iBriganti”, whose owners, to their credit, spruced up and modernised the interior, with a stylish black, brown and white colour scheme, featuring wooden furnishings, stained wooden floors and interesting wall displays. That was a major improvements from the general 1980s drabness of the previous occupants, but as restaurateurs, they were amateurs and in less than a year they too was gone. Now it’s “Benvenuti”, and judging by the small turnout on a Saturday night, I’m not confident that it’ll do any better than its predecessors. There was just a smattering of other diners, perhaps two or three tables occupied altogether including us, although one table of four quite near to us were fairly animated and voluble, so they made up for the lack of patrons and I must confess did brighten things up a bit. There also seemed to be steady stream of take-away patrons which also kept things fairly busy for staff.

SERVICE
Full marks to our pretty Italian waitress who was polite and efficient. Despite it being fairly empty, as mentioned, she was kept fairly busy, but coped well. Orders were quickly taken and dishes came out promptly and in the correct order. She was just a delightful person: warm, friendly and patient, but without being obsequious or overbearing. The owner too was appreciative and thanked us for our custom and our tip: Always a pleasant way to end the evening.

COMFORT
With all the wood, glass and white walls, this can be a cold venue in winter, especially if the front door is left open, as it often is. One previous occupant, Old Castile, managed to keep it warm inside with a stack of tower heaters at strategic locations but these don’t seem to have survived the new owners. Chairs are firm and comfortable, but tables are a tad cramped although fine if only two are dining.

MENU
The menu is fairly limited with only a small selection of mainly pasta and pizza dishes, with a few chicken and veal ones thrown in. It’s a small document, a tad difficult to read in the dim lighting, but it’s neatly designed and wrapped in a plastic laminate to keep it clean and hygienic. Unfortunately, many of the “specials” on the specials board weren’t available, which was a bit frustrating.

TOILETS
Toilets are quite fancy and well provisioned, except I didn’t like the communal arrangement, which reminded me a bit of an army barracks or summer camp, with banks of cubicles and wash basins. There are four cubicles, two for males and two for females all in a long row in the same area. It would have clearly been preferable to have separate male and female conveniences and I believe this is the way it was under the previous owners. Still it’s all pretty clean and tidy and adequate for the purpose.

ACOUSTICS
As it was fairly empty, we had no trouble in conversing despite the lack of carpets or any other noise absorbers.

COST
Prices are exceedingly reasonable and you can get a decent plate of pasta for $17. We came armed with a $20 Dimmi rewards voucher which kept our bill to a very modest $55 and for that we got two small bottles of sparkling wine, a VB, a bruschetta bread, rocket salad and two pastas. Certainly can’t complain about that in these dire days of soaring prices. Even without any voucher or docket deal you could easily get away with less than $30 a head and still leave feeling full and satisfied.

BOOKING
Judging by the small crowd on a Saturday night, I don’t think bookings are necessary.

PARKING/ACCESS
You’ll find Benvenuti on Avoca Street, not far from the corner of Alison Rd. We drove around the corner and found a spot in Alison Rd, opposite the Coach and Horses Hotel, where restrictions end at 6.00pm. If that doesn’t work, or if you can’t find a space on Avoca Street, the next best option is Frances Street, near the Randwick Town Hall, where you’re sure to find a spot. But just be aware that if coming from Bondi Junction, there’s no right turn into Frances St from Avoca Street, so best to go down Cowper Street and into Cook Street and then into Frances Street.

SUMMARY
We had a pleasant evening and everything went off smoothly. The food was fresh and tasty and served in generous portions. Service was a polite and efficient, prices are very reasonable and parking isn’t too much of a drama if you know where to look. The lack of other diners did make the atmosphere a tad quiet, but I didn’t mind too much, and actually appreciated the relaxed and laid back ambience. Menu choices are a bit limited so bear that in mind if pasta and pizza aren’t your thing.

MEMO
The website looks like one of those mass produced ones where you just add name, address, phone number and highlight a few menu items and which seem to cater only to take-away customers. That’s not really satisfactory. Why not spend a few hundred dollars to have your own unique one? That, and a bit more advertising may help pull in more diners, because this place deserves to be better patronised."

"Choy 's has become our 'regular ' when taking grandchildren out for dinner. "Good Tucker ' as they say, although perhaps not the right terminology for Chinese food. Sizzling steak and prawns are the 'go to ' food. When the kids are happy, the adults are doubly happy happy... good food, good kids."

"FOOD TYPE
Vietnamese

FOOD QUALITY
Five of us dined on a hot summer’s night in mid-January. We started with couple of bottles of crisp, refreshing Asahi Super Dry (a steal at $7 a bottle, some places charge $9 or even $10) and a shared serve of vegetarian spring rolls ($12 for five). The spring rolls were bigger than your standard ones. They were crunchy and packed full of fresh, tasty vegetarian filling including mushrooms. What a great way to start things off. Then it was onto the mains. We ordered a selection of dishes including lemongrass chilli beef ($16), a sizzling beef hot plate ($19), lemongrass and chilli chicken ($19), stir fried chicken and vegetables ($16) and a vegetarian dish with soft egg noodles ($17). To round it off, four serves of rice at $2 each. Everyone agreed that the food was first class; brimming with those subtle Vietnamese flavours and aromas that sets this type of cuisine apart from the other Asian varieties. My lemongrass chilli beef was delicious. It had lashings of thinly cut, fine pieces of beef, well cooked just the way I like it and soaked in a tart and tangy lemongrass dressing and served with a liberal helping of vegetables. The fluffy white rice was the perfect accompaniment. My friend’s beef hotpot was brought to the table on a sizzling plate. The colourful stylish crockery added a touch of class to the presentation. Serving sizes were generous so there was no room for dessert after that lot.

ATMOSPHERE

We choose to sit outdoors, as it was a hot, steamy night, and what an inspired decision that was. I’m normally not a fan of alfresco dining in Sydney, what with all the traffic fumes and, unlike the Europeans, we really aren’t set up for this kind of dining. But in this case, apart from the occasional bus driving past with a deafening roar and a belch of poisonous fumes, we were quite happy out on the pavement enjoying the warm and balmy evening and watching the passing parade. Inside, it’s an odd configuration: long and thin and seems a bit cramped. If my memory of living in Randwick serves me correctly, this used to be a rather bland and dull Italian restaurant for many years, so it’s great to see it spruced up and reinvented as a cool and modern Vietnamese. The night we dined the place was packed and the atmosphere was abuzz with energy and activity, inside and out. But it’s super casual and laid back too, so just come as you are.

SERVICE
Service with a smile is the watchword here. These waitresses were all so pleasant, friendly, polite and efficient that it was a pleasure to be served by them. Orders were promptly taken and dishes came out quickly; so quickly in fact that the mains were already on the table before we’d even finished our starters, but better that, than having to wait ages for your meals. And a special thanks to these guys for accommodating us at such short notice as we only phoned for a table about two hours before dining.

COMFORT
Despite sitting out on the pavement we were quite comfy, with firm chairs and two tables pushed together for the five of us, gave ample room to fit all the dishes.

MENU
Menu is fairly well laid out on coloured sheets protected by plastic laminate to keep them clean and hygienic, and bound in a sturdy leather cover. Drinks and specials are on loose leaf A4 pages.

TOILETS
Toilets are at the back not far from the kitchen. There are separate male and female ones, but I found the configuration of the male one quite odd (see pic), with a urinal and a toilet in the same cubicle. I’m not sure how that’s supposed to work but if it’s meant to accommodate two people at the same time, count me out. I’d rather wait. Wonder what the women’s is like?

ACOUSTICS
I imagine that inside dining could be quite noisy in that confined space and with tables packed fairly close to one another. But outside on the pavement, apart from the roar of the occasional bus, we didn’t have too much trouble conversing.

COST
With our 25% Ent Book discount (up to a max $25) we paid a modest $103 for three Asahis, a shared entree, five mains (one with extra vegetables) and four serves of rice. That’s just great value in these dire economic times.

BOOKING

This place is clearly popular with the locals and we were lucky to get a last minute booking. But my advice is to reserve yourself a table early, especially for weekend dining.

PARKING/ACCESS

Being The Spot, parking unfortunately is the one negative. Don’t even bother looking for something around here. The whole area is narrow, awkward and congested and it’s difficult to find a parking, so save yourself the hassle and frustration and just look for a “spot” (‘scuse the pun!) somewhere in one of the residential streets of Randwick, and enjoy the walk to the restaurant.

SUMMARY
We had an enjoyable and relaxed evening at La Sen. Food was first class, ambience was just right for a hot summer’s night and service was fast and efficient. Prices are reasonable. You just can’t ask for anything better.

RECOMMENDATION

Anything with the word “lemongrass” in it won’t disappoint."

"Great restaurant for families with the kids area a good distraction for young children! I prefer the breakfast and lunch menu to the dinner but overall the food is good and different to your normal standard cafà fare!"
