"I returned for my 6th or 7th visit since my 1st visit and review. Sushi Well in Surrey. I am continue to be impressed with Chef Jake's consistent execution, quality and overall value. Interestingly the menu was different than every other time I had been in. Apparently under new management which came with a new menu. I had fancy rolls 1 and 2. 1 was seaweedless layers of lightly grilled salmon and rice with a delicate yellow sauce garnished with a dollop of pesto and a one of a caramelized onion and reduced soysauce and vinager. My second roll was a imitation crab, avocado, prawn topped a combo of crispy fried chunks of snapper and shredded yam. Both rolls were a wonderful balance of flavors and textures. I am used to the pink rice now and will keep going back for the above average quality, smooth service and great overall value. Oh and on my next visit I am anticipating the tuna tataki roll."

"We were camping in Surrey for several nights, and we were lucky enough to discover Hanaya on the first night we were there. Although it seems like Metro Vancouver has a Japanese restaurant in every block, we kept going back to Hanaya because of their wide-ranging menu and very good execution. Although the restaurant is fairly small (long and narrow), the food is very good. The miso soup (which I think is often a barometer for the meal to come) was very good. Miso soup is easy to make, so if a restaurant can't get that right, it's a bad sign. I enjoy sushi, but I also like other Japanese dishes and sometimes make Japanese food at home. While my husband had sashimi at every meal (which he said was made with very good quality fish), I enjoyed udon, donburi, and yakiudon. "Hanaya" means "flower house" and silk cherry blossoms and branches cover the ceiling; it sounds very kitschy, but I found it surprisingly charming and well-done. The walls and ceiling are also covered with photos of guests, which go back many years. It was fun to look at the walls in the background of the photos to see how many photos were on the wall, and so figure out which photos were the oldest. Staff were friendly and efficient. When my husband received hokkigai instead of the hamachi sashimi that he ordered, there was no problem when the error was pointed out; I got a free dish of hokkigai and he soon had his hamachi. When we returned the following night, he was offered another complimentary order of hamachi by the same server that made the initial mistake. This was the only problem that we had, and it was handled without any fuss at all.We ate at a number of Japanese restaurants in Banff and Vancouver on our trip, but Hanaya is the one that we would go back to without any hesitation."
