"He made a stop to use Wi-Fi and washrooms. Typical McDonald's, relatively clean as the participants were sanitary tables, sweeping floors and scrubbing rooms. We were there for breakfast, had an egg McMuffin, muffins, tea and Apple Turnovers. We left when lunch began, was busy enough, I used my phone app to order food, it came out as adapted and quality was good. Parking is better than the Tim's location."

"Ah, The Olive! This eatery has now been a part of the Prince Rupert food scene for just over one year. When I wrote my first review, The Olive had barely been open for one month. I’d noted amongst other things that, as a new...business, it had a lot of growing up to do. Their customer service in particular needed a lot of work – servers were slow, muddled and clearly not comfortable dealing with patrons. The food was generally good, but as a self-professed “multi cuisine restaurant” I think The Olive kind of struggled with identity. It didn’t know what it was. Mediterranean fusion? Indian Fusion? Who knows. In any event, since my initial review, I’ve visited The Olive a few more times. As I’d come to expect, the food – particularly during dinner – was very good. The Asian wings were cooked to perfection and weren’t overly saucy; the Kick Bang Shrimp continued to impress; and the salmon shrimp piccata remained ever the star with its beautiful presentation and fantastic flavour. But starting in and around January of this year, I noticed something: The Olive made some minor changes to their menu. While they kept many of the old favourites, new items were added in the way of burgers and fried chicken. Personally, I’m not too big on the inclusion of burgers because there are a lot of places in this city to get a decent burger; however, the addition of fried chicken and potato wedges or taters, mojos, scojos or whatever you want to call them is indeed a welcomed change because, to put the matter bluntly, there really isn’t much in the way of decent fried chicken in this town – and there hasn’t been since KFC shut its doors in the 1990s. Indeed, when I learned of this menu modification I just had to check it out . . . and I’m glad I did. The chicken was beautifully done: Nice crispy, seasoned exterior and a juicy, flavourful interior. Importantly, the chicken wasn’t dripping with grease, either. And the potato wedges? Excellent as far as potato wedges are concerned. They – like the chicken – are made to order and therefore aren’t soggy or dry, unlike most around here think PJ’s Midway . So, yes, the food is good, but the food has never really been an issue. Unfortunately the atmosphere and ambiance is still pretty subdued; that is to say, it is still very much non-existent. The bland yellow walls and lack of natural light make you feel as though you’re eating in a box – and you are both literally and figuratively. On the plus side, though, they’ve started playing music in the restaurant, which helps a little bit, but there’s still work to do on this front. Importantly, the customer service during dinner service has improved dramatically. The folks who were working there a year ago aren’t there anymore or just haven’t been there during my visits and have been replaced by people with better training and, presumably, more experience in the realm of customer service. The new servers are friendly, engaging and far more confident in what they do and it shows. For this improvement alone The Olive deserves many a kudo. One final observation: In the final weeks of May I couldn’t help but notice even more changes to The Olive’s menu. Burgers, pastas and sandwiches seem to have become the focal point while a lot of the Mediterranean-Indian inspired cuisine has vanished from the menu including the wildly popular salmon shrimp piccata !!! . Now, their official website says that “their current menu” will be served at their new restaurant, The Pavillion opening in less than a week , so I presume the “classic” Olive menu will be served there? If so, then that is fine and I will endorse this menu change. After all, The Olive is located in a hotel and therefore does need a menu broad enough to appeal to the greatest number. If, however, these classic Olive menu items fail to materialize, then I’ll lament their loss and seriously question the change. I guess we’ll wait and see! FOOD: 4/5 SERVICE: 4/5 VALUE: 4/5 RECOMMENDATION: I certainly don’t feel that The Olive deserves to be the lowest ranked eatery on TripAdvisor in Prince Rupert. There are MANY more restaurants in this town that serve up far less impressive cuisine. In fact, The Olive has done much to improve over the last year. Customer service has improved by leaps and bounds; the food has remained consistently good; there have been some positive menu changes and some questionable ones, to be sure ; and they’ve done much to promote their product. All of those are good things and serve as a testament to a new establishment trying to grow . . . though I did chuckle at their promotional material for the fried chicken. I mean, they “borrowed” some graphics from Olive Chicken in Calgary. Too funny! Nevertheless, I did say in my earlier review that “They have Potential” and they’re certainly realizing it.
