"We had a few things to do one Friday morning in Messines, stopped for coffee and tea at Cafe Avenida (not Avenoda) and discovered that they had fish n chips from 12. So ran the rest of our errands and turned up just after noon, passed our tea and coffee cups still on the table outside, and went inside for lunch. After ten minutes or so, the waitress deigned to take our order. There was a smoker in the restaurant, and when I questioned this, was told that it was fine, they had an excellent extractor system. However, when there are several open doors, smoke will blow onto nearby diners no matter how good the extraction system is. There was also a TV playing rock music videos very loud, and when I asked if it could please be turned down, was told No, it couldn't. So we weren't in a terribly good mood when our lunch finally came. The mushy peas were hot from the microwave, but the chips were not even warm, and my fish even had a few cold spots. When we said our meal wasn't hot, we were told that the fat probably wasn't hot enough when the food went in, with the implication being what did we expect being the first customers. No apology, no offer of a replacement order of chips, let alone fish. We had to ask for ketchup, the only thing that might have made the meal palateable, and were eventually given about a teaspoon of ketchup in a little dish, for two people. Dreadful service. If I could, I wouldn't even give it one star."

"This is a restaurante we have visited many times and would always recommend. Good food, a lovely atmosphere, simple and welcoming. In summer the views are great. Rui is especially helpful. It is a good idea to get his advice as sometimes there is a special dish available, cooked in a traditional way or with special ingredients. Excellent value."

"We drove by this restaurant and are so pleased we decided to stop as it was fabulous. Traditional Portuguese food, served by friendly staff and reasonably priced. When we go again we will take pictures. We knew it would be good as was very busy at lunchtime and seemed to be full of locals. There is a English menu if you need one. Thank you."
