"Authentic Portuguese cuisine. The salt cod and potatoe dish was fabulous and the meat stew with pork and beef and with rice and beans was delicious. All locally sourced foods. Freshest bread ever!!"

"We went there for dinner with a party of 5 following our B&B host’s recommendation. Lapas (limpets) and fish pâté as a starter were lovely. 4 of us had fish as mains and they were all not really good in some way: either just pretty bland (fish of the day), while the tuna steaks were dry and overcooked even though we asked them to be grilled medium rare. Instead they were very well done. The 5th dish (vegetarian paella) was ok but came late when all other mains had long been served. Deserts were good. Service was attentive. Prices were reasonable. Nevertheless we left with not such a great experience."

"It will not win reviews for quality food however its a lively place, keenly priced and OK food. Lots of locals gave it a buzz."

"We had the good fortune of visiting São Jorge for the first time with a true local, and she took us to Atafona for lunch on our first day. The service was warm and casual, with our entrada a mix of choriço and morcela and queijo made on the island. These littles bites set the tone. Then, a dose of the local clams (amêijoas), the only true natives to the islands, from what I understand. Tasty, chewy treasures. After running through the options for fresh fish (none, really), we settled on beef steaks, mine with the mushroom and cream sauce. The beef on the Açores is typically inexpensive and delicious (a product of the dairy industry) and the steak came malpasada (rare to medium rare) a little more cooked than we had ordered but still juicy and pink inside. Delicious. The local white wine from Pico Island went well with it all, and only €6,50 a bottle."

"Dark and uninviting from the street, but excellent service and good food at sensible prices. They did not charge for bread and cheese and gave us a liqueur to send us on our way."

"The best place to eat in Velas, without a doubt. Run by a lovely couple who are patient with poor Portuguese, the food is fresh and homely, no frills but delicious. The prices are also incredibly reasonable. We came two nights in a row to sample the pre-order dishes, everything we ate was fantastic. If you’re stuck on time still go along and try the catch of the day, sublime."
