"First ever visit to a East London in search of some old school Cockney culture and Callaghans provided the starting point from a drinking perspective. Situated on the edge of the vibrant and multi ethnic Chrisp Street market in Tower Hamlets, the place epitomised East End traditions with a plethora of West Ham and England football memorabilia adorning its walls. All that was needed was a bust of Queen Victoria and you’d have thought you were on the set of Eastenders. Friendly local clientele, mainly middle aged men, were in evidence at the time of my visit(it was a Tuesday afternoon)with one such regular reliably informing me that this was the ‘cheapest boozer in the East End.’ Having been charged a mere £6 for a pint of Courage and a large glass of wine, who was I to argue. In Edinburgh you’d be lucky to get change from £15 for such an order. Now...the disappointment A blackboard menu provided a long list of appetising and reasonably priced daily specials and just as I was looking forward to sampling ‘two saveloys with pease pudding’, the barmaid advised me that ‘John’ had decided to close the kitchen for the day. In this part of the world you don’t argue with anyone called John so had to leave hungry. Still...the never ending supply of fried chicken outlets on the nearby East India Dock Road helped fill the void."

"Beautiful katsu curry. my friend had korean fried huh she loved! the difference I found was that the chicken breast pieces are cut and fried individually, which is beautiful and crispy when they have it hot. I felt that the amount of curry was a little less for din in, not aware of the amount of abduction. the price corresponds to almost other restaurants."

"When visiting london from oregon in the distant Pacific Northwest of the usa we discovered this little gem on the wapping lane. we had gone a few days earlier to poppie’s in the brick Lane area. the ones they find here are much better not only the fish (a delicious piece of squid, fried to perfection) but also the chips. it is a small business, so if the weather allows, I suggest their order in the small park directly on the road to dine al fresco. and oh yes, the owner of the fishing business who refused to make his photo was charming. highly recommended."
