"Whenever I go to Basel to give a lecture at the University, I head to the Aeschenplatz because it's one place where I know I can go home again. The Hilton might be gone, but Aeschenplatz survives and thrives largely due to the absolute dedication of its owner. You'll be able to tell who she is because she's the one visiting every table, offering a welcome and checking on food. She's a human perpetual motion machine distributing good cheer. And you can eat there! I usually choose from the Swiss part of the menu. I almost always eat hackbraten, a bit like a meatloaf, with green pepper sauce and spaetzli, small dumpling like delights. But sometimes I'll slip over to the American side and have a taco salad fresh and wonderful. I also always meet friends there. Some of them have been going there for over 20 years; I'm working on it. It looks inside like a beer hall with wide open spaces and beamed ceilings. The walls are art full. In the good seasons you can sit outside in the front and watch the crazed traffic at the Aeschenplatz, or you can retreat into the inner courtyard, where summer seems light and welcoming. If you visit Basel and want to step into a little bit of cosmopolitan Switzerland, drop by the Aeschenplatz. If you live in Basel and haven't been there why not!"

"Vor ca. 3 Wochen hier gewesen und sensationelle Capuns gegessen. Deshalb wieder die Capuns bestellt, die leider nicht annähernd gleich schmeckten. Dieses mal fade, weniger und langweilig. Schade, dass die Qualität bei selben Speisen so schwankt. Ansonsten; tolles Ambiente......werde sicher wieder gehen."

"A brewery with a traditional appearance. Centrally located, in a very busy square. The interior, very beautiful. Crowded until closing time. Waiters, a bit inattentive. One evening, I sat for about 10 minutes on a stool at the bar waiting for someone to ask me what I wanted. Finally I left... As I was staying at a hotel located nearby, I came back the other evening, but the waiters looked just as bored as on the previous visit, even though it was almost closing time and there were only a few customers."
