"This brasserie experience was shaping up quite well for lunch, the food being well-cooked and tasty, until a bad thing happened. The older waiter (owner perhaps had been very friendly and attentive, getting menus on the table quickly and offering our dog a bowl of...water, which is always a big winner that guarantees a generous tip from me and my husband! But it was a very different story with the younger male waiter who assumed responsibility for our table thereafter. He seemed surly from the start, maybe his limited English making him uncomfortable with us. Water came without glasses (or bubbles, but maybe language to blame there) and he was hard to find to let know.The various dinner crockery was very slow to be cleared after we finished each course, which also made it more dramatic when all of a sudden the large garden umbrella at the neighboring outside table was swept up by a gust of wind, coming down on my head! Our glasses etc were all knocked over, the wine and water therein spilling across the table onto my husband's trousers! While the waiter promptly removed the umbrella from my head, he didn't ask if we were OK. He also left us to upright the various glasses etc and mop up the spillage on the table and my husband. This put both a literal and metaphorical dampener on things such that we decided to leave, returning the demi-carafe of wine that had just arrived (thankfully removed from the bill), feeling quite shell-shocked by the whole event. This sort of thing can happen anywhere (although having umbrellas that attach to their stand reduces the risk considerably) and had the waiter been apologetic, cleared the table, and perhaps offered a glass of wine to compensate for the spillage we would have thought nothing of it, instead returning happily for more lunches, probably even recommending it to others. Just goes to show what a difference one not so good waiter in a hospitality establishment can make."
