City: Scugog, 1821 Scugog Street, Port Perry, Ontario L9L 1H8, Canada, L9L1J4
"Sunday on the way home from Peterborough, we decided to find a place to stop for dinner. Not knowing where to go or where to eat, it was suggested to my delight that we try the relatively new smokehouse located in Port Perry that opened just a few years back on Scugog Street. I'm always eager to check out and review smokehouses I've never been to. Being a lover of BBQ and an avid smoker of meat myself, it was an easy decision to make. So we set our sights on Port Perry, entered the address into the GPS and headed for the Port Perry Smokehouse.Upon arriving we were somewhat wooed by the restaurant's rustic old charm. It was warm and welcoming. Edison lightbulbs nestled in mason jar fixtures put out just enough light. A blackboard on a brick wall advertised specials added to its appeal. There are a combination of tables and booths and the tables are equipped with old style like chairs which added to its charm and the colours throughout the dining area are neutral. Nothing too bold or in your face. It's not a fancy place, it's a casual place, a place where you can be at ease. We were immediately attended to when we seated ourselves. Our server was very friendly and attentive to our needs. He answered all of our questions so we ordered or food. I ordered 1/2 Rack of Ribs and a 1/4 Chicken and my guest ordered the Smokehouse Burger topped with cheese curds. For sides we both selected Sweet Potato Fries. My meal included a 2nd side so I chose a serving of their Baked Beans. What's BBQ without baked beans I ask? I also ordered a pound of brisket for both of us to share. The ribs I believe were St. Louis Style side ribs cooked to a the judges expectations. The meat didn't fall off the bone as most think they should. It should come clean off the bone with a little bit of work. The sauce was bold and zesty. I didn't care much for their signature hot sauce. It was too hot for my liking. But their regular signature sauce was fantastic. However, the rub that was used on the ribs could have had a bit more flavour. They relied too much on the sauce to make them pop. The chicken leg was delicious. No complaints there. It had a nice balance of smoke and BBQ and they weren't over cooked. I enjoyed it very much. The fries were crispy and flavourful and the beans although delicious, I felt they could have required a little more touch of sweet to take them over the top. Perhaps a pinch of pure maple syrup would have done that. None the less they were good. My guest's burger was over the top good. He loved it and went on and on about it. The brisket was said to be cooked 15 hours and was super good. I wouldn't change a thing. Good Job!!The portions of each offering I with exception to the beans were huge. So huge after eating half a rack of ribs, one chicken leg, a large dollop of beans and a hefty order of fries, I had to take pretty much the whole order of brisket home with me. My guest was stuffed too. We had no more room for food. This is something I've never done before. I surely wasn't going to waste the brisket though. I ate it later. So if you're a big eater, you won't be disappointed. So all in all, our experience was good. The owner popped by the table to see how we were enjoying our meal. He sure is a proud man and he's proud of what he's done with his business. I understand he's expanded into Lindsay with the Lindsay Smokehouse. You can tell he loves his food and what he's done. The total bill for what we received was fair and the service was good. So easily a four star rating is in order for this day. If I could suggest something for the menu, and that is they should have samplers. They smoke chicken, ribs, brisket, Pork, sausage, wings, but they don't have a dish that offers three smoked samples or three choices of everything they smoke. I've been to several smokehouses and samplers are my usual go to dish. That way I can taste three of my favourite meats they smoke on one plate. The Port Perry Smokehouse is now on my radar and I will definitely be back."
