"I've eaten at The Painswick three times now, so feel I can give a rounded commentary on it. Obviously, I keep going back it's a delightful venue, in a place that I love, and it's pretty good. I'd recommend it. But the fact is, the cooking never quite lives up to the promise of the menu, or to the prices charged. I've found that the exceptional service, the sense of welcome and the charming setting have generally outshone what's been on my plate. Important to state: the cooking is largely of a high quality and the menu is frankly thrilling, (and I give extra kudos for there being a full vegan menu, hugely welcomed by vegan friends I've visited with but this should be displayed on the website alongside other menus . But three things let it down: 1 portions are too small, 2 there is a tendency to over seasoning, and 3 plates come with too little sauce (why chefs make beautiful sauces, such a crucial part of a dish, and then seem embarrassed to put more than a tiny splash on the plate, is a modern affliction of restaurant cooking, and one the Painswick suffers from seriously . That's it. The dishes are beautifully conceived, with a mixture of familiarity and little surprises that should be so satisfying, but often don't quite get there. For instance, on my recent visit, the roast Cornish cod main course was served in an almost comically small portion, barely more than an inch wide. With the best will in the world, a finger of cod does not a main course make but it had enough salt for a full fillet. That carried through for other courses: the scallop starter was delightful, but the scallops were small and needed one more. The lamb rack main was lovely, but small, and we had to request extra sauce (why not just provide a bit extra on the side rather than wait for it to be requested? . There's something about it all that just feels parsimonious and prissy, when it should be indulgent. Some restaurants – those at multiple Michelin star level – can justify minuscule portions through their dazzling creativity; but this isn't that, nor should it be. I want The Painswick to work. I really love it as a place, and for that reason I'll keep coming. And it's so nearly there. But for the reasons above, which I believe could be very easily addressed but appear very embedded in the approach, each visit has left me ultimately a bit deflated and feeling that I had not got value for money."

"We celebrated a family birthday here yesterday. I must say that eating was absolutely great! the brittle wine that I literally disintegrated. the portions were incredibly generous, so much that I think we all fell into a food coma when we came home! would definitely recommend"
