"My friend and I stayed overnight at O Bras last week. We are walking the Portuguese Camino and arrived after a pretty wet day of walking. We had booked ahead via our Camino travel agent and so our main luggage arrives ahead of us each...day and we only need to carry a day pack. We arrived at the same time as three other pilgrims who hadn't booked but there was plenty of room at the inn. The guy that greeted us could only be described as rather strange and a bit spooky. If you remember Anthony Perkins in Hitchcock's classic, you will have an idea. He may not have spoken English very well, but communicated in a combination of whistles, hand signals and clicking sounds. Initially he took us upstairs so we had to lug our bags up some stairs. We got in the room and then he changed his mind and took us back downstairs and let us into another room. He than asked us if we wanted fish or meat for dinner later, which was ok and we chose. The room was ok, you don't expect much on the Camino. The same guy also served as a waiter at dinner and breakfast. He made great ceremony about demanding our real passports and our credenciale for stamping. Seemed like the opportunity to exercise a bit of power. We did get the passports back but he took them into the kitchen for some unknown reason. Dinner was ok and the old guy that was in charge was very nice not sure why he put up with our man?? We also had the experience of our man indicating through sign language, why haven't you eaten everything Reminded me of school dinners back in the day. He then came over and wrote on the paper table cloth, Breakfast and three times 7, 7.30 and 8, without saying anything. We chose 8, but odd way to communicate. At breakfast we came down at about 8.10. There was one other table occupied. We had a coffee pot with no lid. Why? Who knows? Maybe because we were 10 minutes late. It certainly wasn't because they were busy and had run out of lids. I could go on, but you get the picture. A very strange place which we were glad to leave. Made Basil Fawlty seem positively normal. Don't stay!!"
