"Stopped here on our first day in York and had a very pleasant drink and snack. Staff were very friendly and choices of food and drinks very good. We sat outside and staff made sure everyone outside was comfortable and turned heating on were requested. Definitely recommended"

"The hotel itself is lovely clean a nice place to stay .The restaurant wasn't good at all . My daughter is vegetarian there were only 2 choices she had risotto it was undercooked and hard awful . I had chicken it was the toughest I've ever had God knows how you d get it that tough ! We ordered Yorkshire puddings they were greasy and tasteless. We would not eat it there again it was a very bad experience. We had breakfast in there and that was nice ."

"Apparently The Black Swan has a Michelin Rising Star and is a AA rosette restaurant in so our hopes were high for a great evening meal. Sadly we were hugely disappointed as we paid through the nose for some very pretty but completely flavour free food.We started with the free range Freerange Chicken Terrine with Pea Mousse, English Quails Egg, Peas and Crispy Bacon and the Panfried Mackerel with Mackerel Fritters and Warm Pickled Vegetables. Both dishes were extremely well presented but, and it is a BIG but, they had little or no flavour. The Chicken was utterly devoid of any flavour at all, in fact, the only item on the plate that tasted of anything was the crispy bacon. The fish dish was little better, it was amazingly flavourless, the best item on the plate was the warm pickled vegetables. So onto mains… I had the Linecaught Wild Sea Trout with Crab Crushed Potatoes, Samphire and Sauce Vierge and my guest ordered the Slowcooked Belly of Old Spot Pork with Roast Apples, Fondant Potatoes, Bacon and Thatcher’s Cider Foam. Once again the presentation was faultless but the portions were very small. The trout was overcooked and served on a bed of completely tasteless Samphire, the potatoes were over salty and the Sauce Vierge was again utterly flavourless. And this pattern sadly repeated itself for the pork, which was extremely greasy and once again was devoid of any taste at all.I have no idea how this establishment had managed to impress the assessors at both Michelin and the AA; this will remain a mystery to me. Maybe the chef was away when we visited? Who knows? But on the strength of our experience here, I’d recommend giving The Black Swan a wide berth"

"Being local I have been to the cafe several times for coffee but this time I was taking my friend for lunch. I ordered the pulled ham open sandwich and my friend tried to order the chicken one. However, she doesn’t like mayo etc and wanted it plain. The waitress said it couldn’t be done. We asked if they could do a plain cheese sandwich and my friend was offered the kids menu! She changed her order to a scone. When my open sandwich arrived I was surprised to see it was one narrow sliver of bread, about 3cm wide. Surely a sandwich means two slices. I said I didn’t want the salads but was still charged the full £16 for the sandwich. Extortionate!! I could have had a full, cooked main meal for that elsewhere. Coffee fine, food grossly overpriced!"

"Wow the food is amazing. Best brunch we have ever had. I had the Turkish eggs which were phenomenal whilst the other half had the eggs Benedict. He did not read the menu correctly and didn’t realise it included truffle which he detests until the food landed at the table…. Regardless he said the eggs Benedict was the best he had ever eaten including the truffle. Service was amazing, it was really really busy but you did not feel hurried and the food was served in great time. We sat next to the kitchen and were watching the food being prepared …. The 2 chefs are superstars. It’s our first visit to York and I couldn’t recommend anywhere else more."
