"I think the restaurant has changed hands recently, anyway we were told there was a new menu. The menu was somewhat limited, but I considered that a good sign that the food would be properly prepared and thought through. The hostess was a delight and...when I had a question about one of the food items the chef came out to answer (it was quince jelly). We were one of the first people there and the place was still empty except for one other person. I don't know how busy it might get later in the evening or weekends. We were both very satisfied with our meals and the cheeseboard was excellent. There are steps into the restaurant and also to the toilets."

"The dishes were tasty and imaginative and at a reasonable price. The service was polite but didn’t really add to our experience. Cafe Catalan is a tapas place which involves numerous dishes being brought to the table. We were sat at an absurdly small table for this and consequently only received two dishes at once. These needed to be finished before the next two were brought. We weren’t given a choice in the order of the dishes, so some of the combinations would not have been my choice. The restaurant is small and did feel quite cramped. We sat near the bar where the lighting was quite harsh. The ambient music was ‘Spanish’ if you imagine yourself at a beach bar in Torremolinos listening to recycled Euro pop. It was too loud and was by far the most annoying aspect of our evening. It made us laugh though, so not all bad. It didn’t really feel like an authentic Spanish experience. It may be right up someone else’s street though. I don’t think we’ll be rushing back."

"This year we celebrated a truly special anniversary. It involved a beautiful card from the Queen. Due to restrictions we couldn’t hold a party or reception. To say we were sad and disappointed didn’t get near how we felt. Then we had a brainwave. Speak to Dan and Mark and go from there…. That was the beginning of plans that resulted in a perfect romantic evening. Our special celebration had to include the boat. Dan said the boat would definitely be part of our celebration. We had no idea what they had in mind but were more than happy to leave it in their capable hands. We chose a starter and dessert and Dan and chef liaised on the main course. A fabulous Sea Bass. Heaven on a plate. Our starter was chicken liver parfait and desert chocolate and raspberry torte with Tonka bean ice cream. The starter and dessert were served on slates. They looked wonderful and frankly, if served on a plate, it wouldn’t have been right. Our Daughter and her partner came for the weekend to celebrate our special event. We dressed for the occasion and set off for the Port Royal. OMG. We were blown away by the sooo special dining area with the boat the star. We all loved it. Carol and Mark had been very busy. The boat was decorated with fabric and flowers from Carol’s garden. There was a beautiful vase of flowers and the table was laid with beautiful white linen, shining cutlery and gleaming glassware. We were all impressed. It was an emotional moment. We began with bubbles and then the food arrived. We were all in agreement, it was a fantastic dinner, an evening filled with atmosphere and love and it could not have been better or more perfect. Thanks are not enough but here goes… Dan, you patiently listened to what we hoped for. Mark, as always so understanding and Carole, always smiling and so friendly. You are all stars. Chef the Sea Bass was a triumph. So to each of you and all at the Port Royal THANK YOU . Without you and your efforts we wouldn’t have the wonderful memories we made that night. "After a lovely 4 day stay I felt compelled to review the Hotel Du Vin Exeter. The room was gorgeous, swimming pool a lovely treat when travelling with business, but what really made it was the lovely team. Nothing was too much trouble, a special mention to Helen and the lovely breakfast crew, so friendly and thoughtful, a credit to the hotel. I’ll be back (next time for a holiday rather than work! ."

"Glad we booked as this appeared to be a popular restaurant. There is a good range of food on the menu to suit most palate and at a reasonable price. The visit was on a Thursday night which is curry night and a free dessert was included in the price. The beef madras was a good choice, having plenty of flavour and not ruined by overdoing the heat. I would have liked the sauce to have been a bit thicker but that is just a minor quibble. My wife went for the beef brisket which was an excellent choice, with plenty of meat that would fill most diners. Overall we were happy with this visit and would definitely return in the future."

"Great food! The food was absolutely fantastic! The portions were absolutely inexpensive. We visited for our 4th anniversary of Exeter. The view over the mouth was nice as we had our food drinks. The staff was very friendly. I had a shell of shell shells that were reasonably fed 2 3 people and they were delicious! If we're ever in the area, I'd leave my way to return!"
