"Living in Colombia several years, Mexican food is one cuisine that is greatly missed, having been immersed in authentic fare all over Mexico and the various U.S. offshoots: Tex-Mex, New Mex-Mex and Cal-Mex. Frankly, Mexican food offered in Colombia has been exceedingly disappointing. Not to mention expensive. It was hard to resist becoming angry at what was trotted out of the kitchen of Milagro, for example. The concept of Mexican food in Colombia is often just a couple mean enchiladas on a plate. No rice. No beans. No totopos (chips).Not so at El Zócalo (http://www.atrapalo.com.co/restaurantes/el-zocalo-el-retiro_f16553.html), which is not a chain, number one, and presents an extensive menu of Mexican and international dishes from Entradas (Appetizers) to Postres (Desserts), beef, chicken and fish, and a large offering of cocktails and spirits (however not too extensive choice of beer).El Zócalo (Town Center) here refers to its namesake, the historic grand plaza in downtown Mexico City. The restaurant occupies the second floor in the Zona Gourmet of El Retiro, surrounded by other worthy places like Sushi María, Toritto's, Cazuelitas (Paisa Food) and Callao (Peruvian). Just across the street are other restaurants like Serenata Paisa, an Ecuadorian place and a new Tapas wine/spirits place.You are greeted at El Zócalo with a small dish of chips and three dips: black beans, hot sauce and "hotter" sauce, remarkable for Colombia, which goes for tepid "Aji" for the most part. The hottest sauce here was beyond my own pain threshold.On this visit, we got in the mood starting with a couple double shots of Herradura Tequila. Drinking in this way, the alcohol will cost more than the food.My partner ordered a mixed chicken/beef burrito, which filled up the entire oblong plate, covered in cheese and red sauce. Spying a dish from southern Mexico on the menu, my selection was Cochinita Pibil which I requested as a plate, including (White or Mexican) rice and black beans refrito. Remembering their beans portion was skimpy, I ordered an extra. A tortilla warmer was presented containing an ample number of "Silver-Dollar" size corn tortillas, familiar serving size when in Mexico.The cochinita was somewhat dry, in my opinion and had a bit of gristle, but was tasty in all, when made into soft tacos with rice, beans and guacamole.On other occasions, we've enjoyed the Tostada (choice of chicken or beef) and various enchiladas, including the classic Enchiladas Suizas, here served with either chicken or beef.Desserts are somewhat perfunctory--ranging from a cup of ice cream to Tiramisu. Haven't tried any of those yet.Despite being a bit pricey (you can get a full steak dinner downstairs at Torittos for most of the entrées, and some of the appetizers, offered here), I'm grateful to have a place that serves up pretty authentic Mexican food here in eastern Antioquia.When the Mexican food craving hits, we're definitely revisiting El Zócalo."
