"Lebanon and Beyond is a cozy Lebanese restaurant housed in an art-deco building. They offer a range of traditional Lebanese dishes including lamb kofta, felafel and their famous garlic skewered chicken.

I tried their skewered chicken and spinach pie on my visit last night. On the one hand, The chicken fillet/breast are marinated with paprika and grilled on a skewer. Juicy and tender, they are appetizing and delectable. On the other hand, the spinach pie was a little disappointing. The acidity of the sour marinate overwhelms the natural texture and flavour of spinach."

"FOOD TYPE
Italian

FOOD QUALITY
My wife and I dined here on a chilly Saturday night in early June. We kicked things off with a refreshing VB ($7) and a bottle of crispy sparkling white wine ($9). We’re both partial to sparkling white wine so I always prefer it when they bring us a bottle rather than simply a glass. For entrees, we ordered a serve of bruschetta bread ($6) and a rocket salad ($13). The bruschetta was nicely presented on colourful blue dish. The toppings were ripe and fresh, but unfortunately the edges of the toast were burned, which marred what was otherwise a pleasant and tasty way to start. The rocket salad was wholesome and nutritious with lashing of the green stuff, topped off with pine nuts and a sharp, tangy dressing that tasted a bit like “Thousand Islands”. For mains, we played it safe with spag bol for me ($17) and penne arrabiata ($17) for my wife. Neither dishes disappointed. My spag was soft and chewy and the meat was beautifully cooked to perfection with a slightly spicy flavour to liven it up a bit. The arrabiata was similarly spicy and well cooked. Serving sizes were just right, and they left no room for dessert!

ATMOSPHERE
This location has seen more Italian restaurants than I’ve had breakfasts. My own memory goes back to “Old Castile” during the noughties, which was a rather dreary place with a moody and unfriendly maitre d. That only lasted a few years and was replaced by a joint called “Made in Naples”, which offered so many freebies and “eat as much as you can for $20” deals that it eventually folded. The next incarnation was “iBriganti”, whose owners, to their credit, spruced up and modernised the interior, with a stylish black, brown and white colour scheme, featuring wooden furnishings, stained wooden floors and interesting wall displays. That was a major improvements from the general 1980s drabness of the previous occupants, but as restaurateurs, they were amateurs and in less than a year they too was gone. Now it’s “Benvenuti”, and judging by the small turnout on a Saturday night, I’m not confident that it’ll do any better than its predecessors. There was just a smattering of other diners, perhaps two or three tables occupied altogether including us, although one table of four quite near to us were fairly animated and voluble, so they made up for the lack of patrons and I must confess did brighten things up a bit. There also seemed to be steady stream of take-away patrons which also kept things fairly busy for staff.

SERVICE
Full marks to our pretty Italian waitress who was polite and efficient. Despite it being fairly empty, as mentioned, she was kept fairly busy, but coped well. Orders were quickly taken and dishes came out promptly and in the correct order. She was just a delightful person: warm, friendly and patient, but without being obsequious or overbearing. The owner too was appreciative and thanked us for our custom and our tip: Always a pleasant way to end the evening.

COMFORT
With all the wood, glass and white walls, this can be a cold venue in winter, especially if the front door is left open, as it often is. One previous occupant, Old Castile, managed to keep it warm inside with a stack of tower heaters at strategic locations but these don’t seem to have survived the new owners. Chairs are firm and comfortable, but tables are a tad cramped although fine if only two are dining.

MENU
The menu is fairly limited with only a small selection of mainly pasta and pizza dishes, with a few chicken and veal ones thrown in. It’s a small document, a tad difficult to read in the dim lighting, but it’s neatly designed and wrapped in a plastic laminate to keep it clean and hygienic. Unfortunately, many of the “specials” on the specials board weren’t available, which was a bit frustrating.

TOILETS
Toilets are quite fancy and well provisioned, except I didn’t like the communal arrangement, which reminded me a bit of an army barracks or summer camp, with banks of cubicles and wash basins. There are four cubicles, two for males and two for females all in a long row in the same area. It would have clearly been preferable to have separate male and female conveniences and I believe this is the way it was under the previous owners. Still it’s all pretty clean and tidy and adequate for the purpose.

ACOUSTICS
As it was fairly empty, we had no trouble in conversing despite the lack of carpets or any other noise absorbers.

COST
Prices are exceedingly reasonable and you can get a decent plate of pasta for $17. We came armed with a $20 Dimmi rewards voucher which kept our bill to a very modest $55 and for that we got two small bottles of sparkling wine, a VB, a bruschetta bread, rocket salad and two pastas. Certainly can’t complain about that in these dire days of soaring prices. Even without any voucher or docket deal you could easily get away with less than $30 a head and still leave feeling full and satisfied.

BOOKING
Judging by the small crowd on a Saturday night, I don’t think bookings are necessary.

PARKING/ACCESS
You’ll find Benvenuti on Avoca Street, not far from the corner of Alison Rd. We drove around the corner and found a spot in Alison Rd, opposite the Coach and Horses Hotel, where restrictions end at 6.00pm. If that doesn’t work, or if you can’t find a space on Avoca Street, the next best option is Frances Street, near the Randwick Town Hall, where you’re sure to find a spot. But just be aware that if coming from Bondi Junction, there’s no right turn into Frances St from Avoca Street, so best to go down Cowper Street and into Cook Street and then into Frances Street.

SUMMARY
We had a pleasant evening and everything went off smoothly. The food was fresh and tasty and served in generous portions. Service was a polite and efficient, prices are very reasonable and parking isn’t too much of a drama if you know where to look. The lack of other diners did make the atmosphere a tad quiet, but I didn’t mind too much, and actually appreciated the relaxed and laid back ambience. Menu choices are a bit limited so bear that in mind if pasta and pizza aren’t your thing.

MEMO
The website looks like one of those mass produced ones where you just add name, address, phone number and highlight a few menu items and which seem to cater only to take-away customers. That’s not really satisfactory. Why not spend a few hundred dollars to have your own unique one? That, and a bit more advertising may help pull in more diners, because this place deserves to be better patronised."

"Great flavors, especially the lemon chicken. We also ordered a beef dish which was tasty but supposed to be medium but was a bit overdone. some spicy vegetables on the side which were good. We also had three entrees, some chicken dumplings, potato patties and roasted pork we enjoyed them all. Friendly, efficient service, byo only, they're not licensed but there is a bottle shop very close by. We went on an entertainment book voucher so it was great value, but I'd go back again for sure."

"Great coffee, fantastic food, friendly service. like most foodies, these are a few of my favourite things, all of which I am fortunate to have found here at Nooks Place. This is my local and I love their coffee. Stay for breakfast and try the big breakfast, their BLAT (add an egg for extra deliciousness!), or possibly Sydney's best bacon and egg sandwich? For me, its the big breakfast - home made beans, stunning mushrooms, chorizo, bacon, two eggs your way and turkish toast. Did i mention the wilted spinach and tomato? Big By name, big by nature. This is a great local cafe with sun drenched morning tables (if you are quick) and a cosy inside feel. It has bike parking too if you are looking for a ride friendly stop. I really enjoy my local, perhaps you will too!"

"Rudest service (if you can call it) ever! The rude and evil managers spoiled the mood for all in our party :( Do not make the trouble! Do not go to Kingsford for cheap and happy Chinese food, instead, where you will appreciate your business. Zhu Canton clearly does not care about customers From which they are not I have many. On a Saturday night totally dead, who made the atmosphere very sad. Eating is not even real cantonese."

"Coffee shop and bake bar in Randwick, they are always busy with parents, kids, cyclists..basically everyone on their way to work or school. They do breakfasts like brekkie rolls, eggs including shakahuka, sandwiches and soups. They do make from scratch but also heaps of ready made food to go like homemade muesli and quiche. It's also a bake bar selling a huge variety of artisan organic breads, scones, pastries and muffins. I got the apple crumble muffin which was fresh and tasty with an espresso for an afternoon pick me up. Worth a visit if you're passing by. Quick service and polite staff. No complaints, but gotta be amazing

aroundtheclockfoodie.com"
