"Purple Yam Manila is a culinary vision of Romy Dorotan and Amy Besa. This power couple is behind NYC's Cendrillon (SoHo) and Purple Yam (Brooklyn). They also authored "Memories of Philippine Kitchen" which summarizes their reflection in Philippine food culture, its flavors and tastes.

No wonder Purple Yam Manila would be an expression of their deep love of the cultural heritage in terms of Filipino cuisine.

Their menu costs P2,500 per person and when you go through their degustation menu (with some chit-chat with Amy), you would realize all of it is worth it.

We started out with an "amuse bouche" of popcorn with dried fish and roasted garlic. Then cheese tart with Malagos Farm Rustica cheese and kesong puti from Sta. Cruz Laguna. The pastry shell was flaky and buttery. The cheese tart was served with fresh guava compote.

Next was Kinagang, a Sorsogon "tamale" with shrimps and crabmeat on a bed of buko *& lukadon all wrapped in banana leaf. Then served was Binacol with organic chicken (leg-part), bokchoy, red radish & buko which had the aromatic coconut broth poured from a bamboo stem.

Main course was platters of Beef shortrib adobo with mango vinegar from Abra, barbecued baby back ribs with black peppercorn from Dugan farm Batangas, Camote Anna (camote & taro ala pommes Anna) and a native green salad of spinach, watercress, sayote tops, tomato & mangosteen dressing.

Then there was dessert the made one of the ladies cry at the other table, i kid you not! Purple Yam Malate Special Iced Dessert!! Watermelon ice, home-made nata & kaong, passionfruit sorbet, mangisteen ice cream and pinipig.

To make it short, everything was spectacular!! Fresh clean flavors!

Was it worth it?....... It's all worth it. Just keep your palate open to all possibilities.

boodlebear.wordpress.com"

"Ambiance is fine, it's a small place, and the ventilation could definitely use some work. I dine here often, and I swear that I smell like smoke every time I leave. Sanitation has also become a concern for me recently, as during my most recent return back in December of 2018, there was a small cockroach on my table. As for service, it tends to get rather slow. I've come to expect my food to come out after 30 minutes or so, and only really go here if I have an hour or two for lunch. Food is cheap, and you get your money's worth. I often go for the chicken karaage with rice, which is three sticks of deep-fried chicken served with a small bit of sauce and rice. Not the best, but it gets the...read more"

"December 2016 Korean Food Trip

You would know that a Korean restaurant is authentic when you see that most of its patrons are Korean. That is certainly the case for Myung Ga. There are many Korean restaurants in Ermita-Malate area tucked in every street corner but this one stood out because of outstanding recommendations from friends and frequent visitors.

They serve a variety of appetizers. While most serve 5-6 varieties, this one serves up to 8 different appetizers. According to the waitress, several of its ingredients are flown in from Korea. That is why some of the vegetables are not familiar. Mostly vegetable appetizers were served, they also offered clams and dried seaweeds. My personal favorite was the cucumber kimchi because of its crunch, freshness and heat.

We ordered 2 servings of samgyupsal (grilled pork belly) accompanied spicy scallion salad and lettuce. It was served with the following dips: sesame oil with salt and fermented soybean paste. Meat was tender and not overcooked. We asked waitress to cook it in the kitchen instead of table side. My only comment is they don't have a wide selection of grilled meats as compared to the other restaurants within the vicinity.

We also ordered kimchi stew with tuna instead of pork (kimchi-chamchi jjgae). As always soup was spicy and flavorful. Tuna was tender and fresh. Soup had this distinct fishy taste which was very appetizing.

To cap off the wonderful meal, we were served with an interesting dessert. Its actually sweetened rice broth which washed away the spice in our taste buds.

This restaurant has become my favorite go-to restaurant. Simply the best Korean restaurant in town. I'm quite surprised that it's not listed in Zomato when I checked in November 2016. We'll definitely come back for more!"

"Good enough for a cheap price. This place is for those who want to get a fast food style pasta. Their cream and pesto base pastas are my favorites."
