"My brother visited me in shanghai, so we went to the old town of qibao on the subway line 9, it is a sweet little version of a water city, very touristy. my brother became hungry and although there are many restaurants, I do not speak mandarin, so can not check for vegan eating. I really wanted to show him the Buddhist tempel, on our way there was a little shrine where I discovered the advertising for the restaurant, I asked someone with sign language and they suggested that it was in the tempel. when we entered the tempel grounds, decorated with cats, there is a signpost right from the main buildings, which is directed towards the way to the restaurant. we ordered and paid at the reception before we settled on a table, it was after 1 clock, so the place was almost empty. I ordered some stuffed lotus root, a favorite dish, some dumplings and the qibao nudels. the server brought us tassen tee while we waited, the place is very nice almost canteen style and they can help themselves more tee. the lotus root was delicious in a beautiful delicious thick gravure, the pan roasted noodles were good, very dry and crispy and the noodles were very similar to most roasted vegetables and noodles. I will go back and try more from the menu, but it is good to have a place to eat in this location."

"My comment: We went to the 3rd floor buffet. Superb! Enormous buffet with a huge diversity of dishes, beautifully displayed; lovely place and atmosphere. Very tasty, creative dishes. Its exquisite cooking with a huge range of dishes including appetizers, soups, main dishes, salads, Japanese sushi, a salad bar, fruit, desserts, Hagen Daas ice cream, coffee, an assortment of great teas all included in the price. Every item we tried was fantastic. Also the display and location were beautiful. It should be noted that the price is not moderate. It is, in fact, an upscale and expensive buffet (about $35 US per person) but it was worth it. We thought that it was the best restaurant we have ever been to. Note: Take subway Line #2. Jingan temple station is nearby. They close exactly at 2 pm. Also, it IS open on Saturday. Expensive"

"It’s super easy to find, and there’s a clear Happy Cow sign on the window. I had a fried mushroom dish which was super yummy. Unfortunately it came out way sooner than the other two dishes I ordered, making 1. me almost finished with them and 2. them cold by the time the other two dishes came out. The food is very, very fresh. The next dish that arrived were the walnut buns (dim sum section of menu), which were slightly sweet and pleasant. The next dish that came out were steamed dumplings/jiaozi, that arrived piping hot. They were good, but really filling, so you should be fairly hungry when eating this dish if you’re by yourself. The problem with this dish was with the sauce that came with it, which I can’t even call sauce; it was just melted and very greasy sesame seed butter without any flavor at all. The service was really warm and friendly here, so I’d definitely come back to try more dishes, and bring someone with me next time. They have an iPad menu that has some English, and ordering is pretty easy. Update: I’ve already been here two more times since my first trip, and I will keep coming back because it’s proven to be the best vegan food I’ve had in Shanghai, on top of being very reasonably priced. Dishes I highly recommend: chicken in chili sauce, mushroom buns, “fish” and vermicelli soup pot with pickled cabbage, wonton soup"

"A small, cheap, Dien yo earth place just across the street from the mall complex. Excellent dumpling sauce. Vegetarian dumplings were on the rightmost part of the menu, no English anywhere."

"We went here twice and the food was excellent. highly recommended. some dishes can be a little on the oily side. this can be avoided by careful selection. I think they had descriptions of how to do there, so if u respect what they order, they will not end with a completely unfortunate oily order. the personal is very nice and speaks enough English to come by. updated from previous review to"

"Loads of choice. Beautiful interior. Veggie and vegan options. Lots of wheat meat to choose from. Spring rolls, tofu skin rolls, kung pow chicken, steamed buns, dumplings. Nice waiters. We went with two kids aged 2 and 4 and they were very accommodating kids plates, cups, chairs and they even gave them a toy each!"

"Maybe I was just unhappy with my decisions because there are no pictures in the menu and the descriptions were not really clear to me. the employees do not speak much English, but they can get an English menu when they ask. I choose the potatoes that were very oily and they use an oil with a taste I don't like. the other court were some tofu strips; very dry and I ate only a quarter of them. I left the place hungry. Maybe you need to go there in a group to have more options and bring someone who speaks Chinese."

"As an Englishman in China, a chance encounter with this little slice of Britain was a minor miracle when I first arrived here. After sampling the vegan bangers and mash I was hooked on this tiny place. The wonderful owner Jane is so friendly and speaks perfect English which is great for people like me who don't speak any Chinese. This place is popular with the foreign crowd and it is great to have a place to take friends who are visiting as well as introducing it to my British friends who live here. The pie names are also great puns. The new larger canteen branch has more vegan options which are constantly expanding and it's great that they're providing these options. I've eaten here so many times in the 20 months I've been in Shanghai, before going vegan I've tried the cheese and onion pie, the chips and curry sauce (an old favourite from Manchester chippies). The minted mushy peas, the pies, the gravy, the mash, it's all very tasty and satisfying. If you fancy a little taste of Britain, this must be the place. Not been to this one for a while so was happilly surprised to see the vegan breakfast available, I've had it before at the canteen branch. They've replaced the tofu scramble with JUST egg the sausage patty with an OMNIPORK patty, personally I preferred the tofu old style patty however this is an amazing vegan breakfast (even though I do find the broccoli out of place on a breakfast plate) the fact that they also have HP sauce for the sausage is a big plus!"
