"Those were the instructions for if we wanted anything but I think the man's psychic; he knew we wanted to know where the loo was he knew we would want extra butter to go with the bread and (excellent) soup and he knew that we...could just do with some tap water to help cool us down. A lovely visit to a household parlour, greeted like some lost friends, perhaps on the chance that we might become new friends. A wonderful little café that exudes warmth and charm and although cheap the food looks and tastes great."

"We only stopped for a drink but bar lady/possibly manager was lovely and friendly and had a chat with us. All staff are friendly and as soon as our glass was empty we were offered another drink. This never happens anymore in large commercial bars. We will be back for food: thank you"

"We went to shaks for the first time to lunch after we had been through a flyer. we ordered jacket kartoffel with spicy chicken, samosa chaat and peri peri chicken panini (which the children loved and they are picky). the place is clean, bright, with sitting area and very busy. people really kind and are ordering and was made exactly how we like it was well packed to take out. all foods were made from fresh ingredients before them. the water cycle was still in the water! they only ask at workstations for lunch."

"We visited for Christmas Eve lunch, arrived at just before 12.00pm and the carpark was absolutely full, we eventually managed to park up (not in a bay) and as we went inside we realised that the local church was using the carpark as they had a Christmas service, which must have finished as we arrived. The weather was atrocious, wet and windy, we made our way to the bar area and were then informed that the restaurant had moved and that we had to go back outside and retrace our footsteps to the building we had just passed in the carpark, we assume this was the wedding venue. Surely there must be a way through the building from the bar without having to go back outside. This also happened to other groups of diners. A very nice room with a long empty bar suitable for a wedding but it seemed cold and impersonal with just a couple of tables in use! It took a while for staff to take our order but when it arrived the food was very nice and plenty of it. The log fire was a nice touch, however, the wind was blowing the smoke back into the room which made all our clothes smell, not to mention eating whilst breathing in smoke. Staff were setting up more tables as we ate, all in all, not a great ambiance or atmosphere. As stated, the food was very nice but the coffee was cold and the mince pies never arrived! One would expect that as this venue caters for large weddings that all these niggles would have been ironed out. Room for improvement!!"
