"We went to Afternoon Tea at the 5 star Alvear Palace Hotel with great expectations for an exemplary experience. You need to reserve in advance, you know it is going to be expensive, but you anticipate having a top quality High Tea. Well don 't count on it!!! The entire affair failed on so many levels. While the Orangerie setting is very pretty with high ceilings, potted plants, crisp linens and beautiful china and silver, the food was severely second rate, only to be outdone by the indifferent service. Once our individual tea pots had been provided and the three tiered holders of sandwiches and patisseries had been placed on the tabl, our waiter disappeared. We were offered neither milk nor lemon for our tea. As for the food, smoked salmon was on pumpernickel so thick you could hardly chew it, while the same leaden bread was used for mandolin sliced cucumbers. The so called finger sandwiches consisted of two fillings only tuna or cheese jam on huge slices of thick dark bread, staked like DVD boxes together on the bottom tier. The tiny scones were served without clotted cream and the marmalade and lemon custard portions barely served one person. The selection of petit patisseries on top was 90% chocolate so much for the selection of fruit tartlets. Then came the petit gateaux chariot with enormous patisseries that were far too big to be appetizing. Our waiter never returned to heat up our tea and we finally had to chase him to get our bill, Eventually we had to go personally to the front desk to get our bill and pay it, Do not go to the Alvear Palace for Tea. It is not worth the money or the experience."
