Tufton Mews Cafe Wine Shop from Appleby Menu

"Renowned for its vertiginous landscape and breathtaking views the lake district has always been a firm favourite for the outdoor type. But in recent times Cumbria has quietly built a reputation as a first class foodie destination boasting the most Michelin star restaurants in a county outside London. We were keen to try the ambitious 1863 in Pooley Bridge proudly named after the date it was built. The modern version was welcoming and well furnished with plenty of interesting memorabilia to browse between courses. The 7 course tasting menu started with the regular amuse bouche, tasty but not stunning and there was a suprise glass of bubbles with the wine pairing. The opening venison tartare was splendid, packed in flavour with a welcome hazelnut texture contrast. All courses were excellent but the star of the show was undoubtedly the Creedy Carver duck, perfectly cooked, well seasoned, a crispy skin and accompanied with duck leg wrapped in savoy cabbage and pumpkin seeds. The wine pairings were well matched although the Rioja Blanco, with the halibut; was perhaps slightly over woody for my pallet. If there was one criticism the sommelier needs some work, particularly if there is ambition to join the Cumbrian elite with a star. The closing expresso was weak and my Balvenie 12 was wrecklessly delivered with a lump of ice but overall an enjoyable fine dining experience and well recommended."

"I recently visited Cumbria with five friends (so 6 of us in total). We decided to treat ourselves to a curried dinner and, being near Appleby we chose ashiana. To give some context we were hungry boys at this point, strong boys. In light of this, and despite local objections that ‘we’d never make it’ we ordered twelve (12) curries for us six (6) lads. Meaning 2 curries per person. What a treat we were in for. Immediately upon entering the curry house the respect of the staff was palpable, the twelve (12) curries handed over like a precious relic. Once home we tucked into our curry and reached a state of ecstasy at bossmans exquisite spicing. Much, much more lay ahead. As we dove deeper into curry delirium the flavours only heightened. As i looked around, I could see the deep respect for this curry, written in the eyes of my comrades. This remarkable meal barely touched the sides of bossmans deep, layered menu yet contained unique innovations, wonderful rediscoveries and crowd pleasing classics. A tour de force"

"Great eating experience! we arrived a few minutes before closing the kitchen and we still got warm welcome and hot meal served in no time! we loved it so much that we came back the next day and we were surprised again very positiw. of the sections of the specializations and of the quality of our meal! highly recommended! very good and I wish I could hug the chef to risotto that was served me."
