"I've never been to the small village of Valguarnera, so being hungry and on my way to an agritourism which I knew didn't offer any food, I drove to the nearest village. A quick look up on tripadvisor and we headed to Il Canale. A small place, no frills, no luxury, simple, yet feels home. We were seated on a good sized table that could hold 6 (we were 4), place was busy, but not full. I asked for the menu, but there is no menu here. I asked for the wine list, but there's also no wine list here. So the lady took our drinks order, and a man came to assist us. Here they seem to work with fresh ingredients, cooking to what's available in season. Being hungry and been travelling for 3 days, we wanted a good dinner, so we were open to try what they had on the night, We started with an antipasto, a nice mixture of soft and hard cheese, salumi, vegetables, egg based antipasto ecc, genuine and very enjoyable. Then we moved for a pasta dish. Bucatini with pork ragu, the sauce was super, one of the best ragus I had, and I have eaten in hundreds of places all over Europe. After we had the bistecca, not the best I had, but accaptable. All went down with a bottle of Nerello Mascalese. For desserts I wanted something chocolate based but almost nothing was still available, so I had to set for a cassata which was fine. What disappointed me most is the selection of wine. In a region where wine is produced in large numbers, from cheap to exceptional quality, I was only shown 4 red wines. I work in the wine trade and the basic wine menus I do, normally include a minimum of 40 wines, so I did expect something more when it came to wine. Price came to €32 per person, which is exceptional value for money. If I'm in the area, this place is on my list. Well done to the owners who genuinely does a very good job."
