"We had a pretty terrible meal here. The deep fried starters were okay, as was the salad, but anything made ‘fresh’ was a mistake. Bread rolls burnt on top and not cooked in the middle, soup was brown water, Sunday lunch offered a dry crumbly...meat with a mix of completely uncooked veg and total mush that slid through the prongs of the fork. We ordered some side dishes and puddings that never came at all and we had to ask to have them taken off the bill at the end. No one asked if our food was okay, so presumably the staff know it isn’t. It was a special occasion, but they were late showing us to our table and then rushed us at the end of the meal because they had mistimed it for the next booking. I think it would have been hard for them to make it any less ‘special’. The play area is dangerous, with rotten wood and broken play equipment. I can see they’re very busy at the moment, but getting a carpenter in to fix things up needs to be a priority. It’s not safe. It’s such a nice building and location, it was a real shame about the food and the maintenance of the garden. If you visit, stick to drinks and maybe a plate of chips. I don’t understand where the good reviews have come from."

"Such a lovely place. We went here on a whim and were so pleasantly surprised by how nice it was! Try the chef surprise me platter we loved it so much we ordered 2 and both were different each time. A perfect way to try new flavours, and it 's affordable too! Dietary restrictions: They were so good about my allergies there was absolutely no issue catering for them. They have gluten free options, vegetarian and vegan options on the menu as well. "First visit for a couple of years to an old favourite. Despite the genial owner apologising for possible slowness due to cost of living pressures (use it or lose it! we were served as efficiently as ever. The feijoada (Brazil’s national dish was to die for, as ever; rissoles and other unusual sides were great too. Also a wide selection of amazing cakes and regional ingredients. Still a hidden gem in a quiet corner of Reading, but if you haven’t been, you’re missing out on a real treat."

"I was born in Indian and have tasted real Indian food in its pure form. the food at spices and spirits is closest to the authentic Indian cuisine with a pronounced taste from the seasoned and the ingredients. they not only add chili powder in the name of spicy foods. it is aromatic and true for the preparation of the plate. the subtle hints of high-quality flavors used in the food are difficult to miss. the food smells beautiful from the place that it comes on its table and has a special taste for every dish. the piece sizes are also decent and justify the price. I found the size of naan a little small, but that's not a big thing honest. I would like to have a Tandoori option if possible. but I also believe that the local moats may not be too sharp on tandoori eating. the ambiente is also beautiful and cozy and gives me a secret feeling (will return to india.) music is subtle and impedes the experience in no wise. the service staff is also very friendly and very polite. had a great experience in diwali at night. thank you."

"Lovely evening celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. We sat outside with a drink in a pleasant seating area with very nice views whilst browsing the menu. Needless to say our choices of starters, mains and dessert were absolutely delicious and so beautifully presented. We will definitely be going again!"
