"Renowned for its vertiginous landscape and breathtaking views the lake district has always been a firm favourite for the outdoor type. But in recent times Cumbria has quietly built a reputation as a first class foodie destination boasting the most Michelin star restaurants in a county outside London. We were keen to try the ambitious 1863 in Pooley Bridge proudly named after the date it was built. The modern version was welcoming and well furnished with plenty of interesting memorabilia to browse between courses. The 7 course tasting menu started with the regular amuse bouche, tasty but not stunning and there was a suprise glass of bubbles with the wine pairing. The opening venison tartare was splendid, packed in flavour with a welcome hazelnut texture contrast. All courses were excellent but the star of the show was undoubtedly the Creedy Carver duck, perfectly cooked, well seasoned, a crispy skin and accompanied with duck leg wrapped in savoy cabbage and pumpkin seeds. The wine pairings were well matched although the Rioja Blanco, with the halibut; was perhaps slightly over woody for my pallet. If there was one criticism the sommelier needs some work, particularly if there is ambition to join the Cumbrian elite with a star. The closing expresso was weak and my Balvenie 12 was wrecklessly delivered with a lump of ice but overall an enjoyable fine dining experience and well recommended."

"The meal has to be one of the best I have eaten. All the flavours were superbly matched and the portion sizes were perfect meaning we were able to eat everything with enjoyment rather than feeling too full half way through.There was a bit of a hic cup with seating with the restaurant manager at the beginning of the meal which could have put a dampener on things- he told us that they don't reserve particular tables and, accepting that, we motioned to the empty table we would sit at to be told that it was reserved! The couple sitting at said reserved table was obviously a VIP couple and we chatted to them towards the end of our meal but it could have been handled better and the manager could have spared our blushes by keeping his voice down as he told us where we could and couldn't sit in an ill natured loud voice. Luckily the sommelier was professional and friendly and restored a felling of welcome and enthusiasm for the dinner ahead so big shout out to the sommelier! Hic cup aside, I would highly recommend the Allium and would return in a heartbeat."

"Just a visit penrith for a few days stay at the george hotel this was the first place we found and decided to book and eat here had no real idea what to expect the big reviews are up and not an exaggeration. eating here is really good. I can't blame the thunfish I had) and the lamb was perfectly done. when they eat here!"

"!Welcoming on entry. Sat at a table that was so cold we had to wear our down jackets throughout. Service was punctual and friendly. The food? Went for the safe bet of burgers on a Sunday menu I always find Sunday pub Roasts sadly...disappointing). Burgers were Ok. These days though, I expect a burger to knock my socks off……it didn’t. The accompanying onion rings were greasy. Nuff said. I’m sure this is usually a cracking little place. Maybe we caught it on an off day?"
