The restaurant is cosy and nicely decorated and we both agreed that the curry was one of the best we’ve ever had. There was a 19% service charge added to our bill which we paid but felt was quite a lot. Another reviewer suggests this...is something that they only do to English customers... View all feedback.
What Ottmar Brandt doesn't like about Maharaja:
I wasn't surprised to read other negative reviews about over-charging etc... Absolute rip-off, almost to the extent of a scam. 7 euro for a bottle of water... seriously?? The food, while not bad quality, was totally bland. We ordered 2 different dishes that tasted exactly...the same.... to the extent that we were asking ourselves which dish was which? Basically a tomato-ish sauce when one asked for Tikka Masala and t... View all feedback.
Passed this resturant often and it always looked so busy, so decided to try first seat was next to the door constantly draft due to the delivery kerl enter and leave moved to a better table and ordered parrots and dive chapaties cheap and from a money and...carry not to house made maharaja lamm curry tasty but not special staff away occupied resturant not relax
Based on the fair reviews I tried maharaja. lamm jalfrezi and salat ordered. the salat was a baptism of salat, tomato, gurken and carrots, and that is not to dress or go to something else and give an original taste. but the jalfrezi. that was far from tasteless, but absolutely disgusting. I don't know what happened to the cook, but the lamb were big chewing pieces with tasteless completely soft cooked vegetables in an undefined red sauce. after a few bites I left the rest well. I say this rarely, but absolutely not recommended.

Basically a tomato-ish sauce when one asked for Tikka Masala and the other Korma. We were starving so just ate. Then they bring down the bill on a hand-written piece of paper and insist on cash payment. I insisted on a till receipt (with VAT breakdown) and to pay by card which they kept trying me not to use. It is obvious there is a tax dodge going on here, would be an idea for the local Revenue Inspectors to pay a visit for an audit.
This restaurant overcharged me and my girlfriend by 14 euro and 30 cents on a 65 euros bill. They charged me for 8 euros for two cheese naan I asked for one , 5.8 euros for dips I've never asked I was not surprised when...they bring it at the table as those are usually offered by Indian restaurants. Finally they charged four beers when we ordered, and got, just three. I checked the bill after having paid, it was a piece of paper written by hand and quite difficult to decipher. When I told the waiter, he argued with me insisting he was sure ! I had four beers but finally agreed to give me back 4.5 euros for the extra beer: when I checked the money, surprise, they were wrong even in give me the right amount as I got 3.7 euros instead of 4.5. End of the sorry: they still owe me 10 euros. Check your bill before paying!
The dosa was incredible and the staff were friendly! would definitely recommend to anybody visiting Hamburg. Seems really authentic
