City: Beaudéan (near Lanne), 349 Place De L'Eglise, Beaudéan, France
"Chez Gabrielle has recently changed hands and is now heavily promoted locally and a new panneau advertising it is on the main road at Beaudean, is now open more reliably, and offers home cooked traditional meals and accommodation for hikers and bikers etc. It is...in competition with the auberge opposite and several similar operations in neighbouring villages and the Pitch is emphasising local seasonal, organic when possible, ingredients (but so do most similar auberges in the area). So, predictably, the dishes on offer are the familiar grilled lamb chops, conifted meats, trout, garbure, saucisson, etc. Portions are copious but viewed objectively are not that special, and our veg (half heartedly roasted spuds and overcooked courgettes) were cold and greasy. They do a gourmet salad or omelettes for vegetarians. Prices are rather high for what is on offer for a main dish. The house wine is from a bag-in-box, but the range of bottled wines laudable for their local provenance, but are marked up quite a lot. A bonus though are the desserts which are pretty good and definitely Maison. Ask for their cafe gourmand for which is decent. Diners are seated at long benches and so will be in close proximity to other patrons and so don't expect any privacy, but do expect joshing and conviviality. We wish them luck as the Lesponne valley doesn't get much passing trade compared with Campan or Payolle I think they need to offer something special before the novelty wears off as most customers will be needing to make an effort to come here if the business is to do well."
