What Vincent B doesn't like about Cafetaria José Régio:
Fairly large café with a good terrace. Staff is friendly, but does not seem to understand English very well, so it's mostly communicating via gestures. Food takes very long to arrive, but is good and reasonably priced. They have large and clean toilets. View all feedback.

"Went here for dinner. But needed to make reservation previously. SO BE ADVISED ! Since they don't have a lot of space, the atmosphere is very rooted to the spectacle of bullfighting so it may not be for everyone. Still is a cozy place with good meals the size of said meals is not grand but it's balanced with an excellent presentation. All and all with was a good experience. Recommended for meat lovers. Once again I advise to making reservations previously!"

"We found the owner/server to be a surly, anti-tourist man. No English, which is fine. We were aware of the custom to put things on the table, and if you eat it, you pay for it. We were offered 3 small plates to begin. We ate one which turned out to be tater tots!! 2,50 Euros for 4 tater tots! We passed on the bacon and unknown meat product that looked like intestines. A basket of bread was put on the table, which we did not touch. He billed us for it. Send it back if you don't want any! The pork cheeks were excellent and came with potatoes. The pork chops and pineapple were paper thin with pineapple in-between. My husband could barely cut the meat it was so tough. They looked to be pounded thin, but still tough and dry (WAY overcooked for the thickness . It came with oily french fries (more potatoes! . My review is mostly for the service. He removed the cost of a lower priced item when we indicated we didn't eat any bread, but still gypped us on our change. He was badly mannered. The small bar anti-room was full of locals. I guess they don't care for tourists- we were staying at the wonderful Casa de Urra. The prices are good if you order something good and don't accept ANYTHING on the table you don't want. It's not sufficient to leave it alone here. I don't know if you can order anything but meat and potatoes."

"Typical local Portuguese food restaurant, food was very good, we had squid with prawns skewer and a deep fried chicken cut in very small pieces with side dishes, mango mousse and drinks, loved it all! It was a Sunday, most restaurants are closed in Portalegre, I’d recommend booking a table in advance."

"We were staying at a Pousada near by and were looking for a more genuine experience. We were recommended this restaurant and thankfully went. From the moment we stepped in the owner Joao made us fell welcome. Despite the restaurant being full and being the only English speaking people there he took the time to walk us through the menu and recommended some local specialties. As he said if you don’t like we give you something else. We had fantastic local sausages, gazpacho, local cheeses and few other items. Local wine was very reasonably priced and great. For mains, we had lamb chops, rice and seafood and a few other items that were all fantastic. We sampled several desserts made by his wife as the regular baker was not well. All were superb. What a wonderful evening and we were treated like family. Loved it."
