"WEe have visited Charoles many times, always on weekends, when the weather is too hot in Madrid, and having lunch or dinner al fresco in Escorial is so enjoyable. We normally have their steak, “lomo alto” which is delicious. However, we had never had the traditional “cocido”, which is supposed to be their trademark, but is available only mondays, wednesdays and fridays... This visit was on a wednesday, we are now retired, and we ordered the cocido. They make it look like a big affair. You can order only if the whole table orders it, and they tell you not ot order anything else. So we did... The cocido is a stew, mixing beef, bonnes with marrow, veal, smoked ham, chicken, peas, potatoes and other vegetables. You start with the broth: delicious. Then come the vegetable and the meat, and the disappointment. The meat is tasteless, too salted, overcooked, and the portions are enormous. I have a solid appetite, but probably did not eat a third of my portion. My wife a quarter. Then came the bill: 40€ per portion, plus wine, water, bread, for a total of 148€. We left disenchanted. The upside was we took the bones for our dogs; what a feast for them!!!"
