What Peter C likes about China Cottage:
This is an unassuming chinese restaurant on the fringe of Ambleside. It looks more like a take away than a restaurant. Don't be put off. We had a simply marvellous meal here. Salt and pepper calamari, good sized service, very tender, salty with a good hint of chilli. The special, an eggplant/ pork shezuan dish was wonderful. Definitely a good option beyond the many pubs in ambleside. View all feedback.

What AniBee13 doesn't like about China Cottage:
Two of our party who both are the same meal (duck in plum sauce) suffered with diarrhoea and vomiting overnight following our visit there . Of course we considers what else they had eaten but they had eaten different things earlier that day so chances are it was the duck . Will not be returning there as definitely not a good omen . "Absolutely delightful place! The food was delicious, we had nachos (huge portion), meat skewers, gambas, calamari, quesadillas and lamb burgers. All of it was amazing, each dish as good as the next, excellent portion sizes and very reasonably priced. We had a lovely waiter, a...young lad, who was very attentive and friendly. Next time we're in Kendal, we'll be back! Thank you!"

"Bought pies, salads, porridge and chocolate to take back to rental cottage. Absolutely wonderful food actually nicer than the eye watering costly meal we'd had out in Grasmere the day before and for a fraction of the price. Pies were Lancashire cheese and onion and the Dhal Gobi. Delicious. The owners were lovely too even though my attempts at the self serve bit were poor. And the chocolate selection wow. You will definitely turn your nose up at the overpriced, sugar laden stuff sold elsewhere in Ambleside after eating the brands they stock. Not cheap but actually worth every penny. You get what you pay for and this place stocks healthy,tasty fuel not calorific rubbish."

"This review is strictly on the afternoon tea experience only. The food was absolutely wonderful, the lady who served food and the male staff (presumed the owner) were both very kind and friendly. I felt that the afternoon tea was an absolute treat since there was nothing to fault with, that was only until it was ruined by the rude woman who was driving past in black 4x4 (presumed female host). After we finished the afternoon tea, I decided to let my dog out from our car to let him stretch his legs before we set off, the rude woman mentioned above asked me if I was looking for a public footpath so I answered no. She then started to lecture me about the ‘no dog policy’ in the property as well as pointing a direction to the public footpath I did not ask. She drove further towards the car park and parked there, got out of her, and started to tell me off in the most rude way possible again. I explained that we just had an afternoon tea here and we’re about to leave. She then turned around started to take stuff out of her boot mumbling loud “stupid..blah blah” in the angry tone, which by the way was clear for me to hear even though I was at least a few feet away from her. I was so bewildered and frustrated at how this perfectly lovely experience went down the hill like this si quickly. Hence I took two stars off even though I did enjoy the food here. Whoever that woman was, please make sure that they cannot behave that way to a guest."
