What nadinej219 doesn't like about Nanny Gs Tearooms:
Visited yesterday with a friend for breakfast, I had the healthy breakfast but naughtily added a couple of hash browns, my friend had the normal breakfast both were lovely. Both breakfasts were £4.95 and came with tea and coffee. Will defo return View all feedback.
We visited this restaurant on a Monday during the summer holidays in 2018 with 2 adults and 2 children. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The big breakfast was great value, and the sausage sandwich was massive. The food was of good quality and cooked to each person's liking.
It's hard to take mum who is in a home out so afternoon tea is ideal for her and we'd heard a good review from relation on face book. The place is small but welcoming, we started with sandwiches (crusts cut off), then a cheese scone (a large one), it was warm and soft and cheesy, next came a scone (again a large one) with jam and cream. By now we were full but there were cakes to come! The sponge cakes were all 3 tiers of sponge and we were full! Boxes were provided and everything not eaten were boxed to be enjoyed later. Everything was freshly made and scrumptious.
Back visiting family and as promised in my last review of Nanny G 's I was going back for tea cake so on a nice, sunny day off I went to Seaham......only to find that Nanny G had moved location. Well, a quick Google search soon put that right and off I went to Sunderland. I 'll admit that the view is not as pretty as the one Nanny G used to have but on the inside of the tearoom, well, it 's just charming and chic. There is a wooden booth, a table with chesterfields and a couple of other tables with chairs that you can buy, as well as the paintings/pictures on the wall. The tearoom seats about 15/16 and has a nice feel to it. I love the decor, red and cream walls, with the electric 'wood burning ' stove and wooden floor. Also the crockery is a mish mash of fine bone china cups, saucers plates. It added to the charm of the place for me. The cake stand was right there and full to bursting with cake, raspberry white chocolate, ferrero rocher, twix, rainbow and lemon. I asked Nanny G where the carrot cake was and she said that it doesn 't seem to sell so well there. What????? Come on people....Nanny G 's carrot cake is amazing so get in there and start asking for it!!! So, I settled for twix cake.......it was yummy BUT I did have to take it away as I had a burger and it wasn 't small...... The menu is pretty much as I remembered it, all day breakfasts, toasties, sandwiches, paninis, jacket pots and the burgers. I had the pork and black pudding burger, not at all dry, just really moist and delicious, served with salad garnish and chunky fries. I was stuffed afterwards but pleasantly so. While I was there, there was a family of four having afternoon tea. I can 't comment on the taste as I haven 't had one but the family certainly had loads to choose from, something like four courses......sandwiches and sausage rolls, cheese scone, fruit scone with jam cream and then a cake stand.....Blimey! They left with a few takeaway containers. I believe that the afternoon teas get great reviews and I can see why....my next visit down I might just have to attempt it. It might be in a new location but the service was top notch and food just excellent, cake still to die for.....Good luck Nanny G and don 't be moving again.....!!
Yay for Nanny G ! What a hidden treasure this place is . Tucked towards the end of the street , nestled in amongst tattoo parlours, second hand shops and takeaways . Do not be fooled by this venues location , once you step through the door , a wonderful world of home baked food , served with love awaits ! We booked in , early booking advised to avoid disappointment , and were given a generous two hour slot . We ordered unlimited tea , pots of , for mother and sister , I had a tea pot full of piping fresh coffee . I like my coffee and this was good coffee . The crockery is a delightful mish mash of bone China cups and saucers . Beautiful serving platters that wouldn’t look out of place in your nanas China cabinet . It fits in with the laid back vibe , it’s not pretentious , but fun and quirky . The walls and shelves are adorned with individual pieces crafted by locals that can be purchased at reasonable prices , my favourite was the , “not Shaun the sheep ,”tea cosy . We embarked upon our three course afternoon tea , starting with a selection of home cooked sausage rolls , sandwiches and cheeses . Beautiful soft bread , not stale or soggy . As the only vegetarian I got to feast on garlic cheese pinwheels , cheese savoury sandwiches , home made cheese rolls and of course , no afternoon tea would be complete without tuna and cucumber on brown . Mam and sister had beef and blue cheese sandwiches , sausage rolls along with cheese cubes and tuna and cucumber sandwiches . All served on a cake stand garnished with rocket and tomato’s . Second course was hot buttery scones . Served with plenty of butter , the cheese scones were flecked with plenty of good quality strong cheese . I’ve never tasted cheese scones so cheesy , outstanding ! The fruit scones came with preserve and clotted cream . I’m not one for fruit scones but these were delicious , rich and buttery with plump fruit . I couldn’t do anything but scoff the lot ! If you are wondering , jam first then clotted cream . Finally , we were served lemon posset , caramel shortbread and individual strawberry tarts and a choice of a slice of gigantic cake . Cake choices were , carrot , bounty , toblerone , chocolate and lemon . I went for bounty , but alas I am unable to report on the taste . As at the time of writing I was unable to sample , I am just too full up . Nanny kindly supplies containers to take home anything you are unable to finish . I can say the cake looks rich and moist . I will look forward to eating it , but need a few hours to let the rest of the feast settle . Coming in at £12.50 a head , with a free gift for the mother , you cannot be robbed . I would gladly have paid £15-£20 for the meal . After all , afternoon tea is a treat and this delivered in taste in abundance . Nanny also serves other food and had a very interesting sounding home made burger selection . I’ll be back to give the burgers a whirl as she makes her own sweet potato and chickpea veggie burgers . It’s nice , as a veggie , to have something that hasn’t just come out the freezer from the cash carry . When I eat out I don’t want to think , I could have bought that from Iceland and made it at home ! You have the option of takeaway afternoon tea , or even to have your afternoon tea delivered to you , complete with crockery and linen . They also cater for children’s parties , I’m sure they’d host any celebration . Nanny g’s is a welcome addition to Sunderland and I wish this lovely lady every success for her and he family . I hope you’ll go visit , if you do , make sure to ring ahead and reserve your table , you won’t be disappointed and that’s a promise . See you soon nanny , I’ll be sure to starve myself beforehand so I can eat all of your tasty food . Thankyou .
Great value at nanny g's .We went for afternoon tea and I loved it ! You do need to pre book. I'm fussy and asked for a plain sandwich not on the list and they were more than happy to accommodate me without any hassle. Unlimited tea or coffee .Big fresh scones and cakes perfect!! Will definately be back .
