"This place was great when it first opened years ago! However it is no longer that way. We had the mushroom soups. Entre the arrachera and the churrasco steaks. We ordered steaks medium rare. Both steaks came out super well done. I took a bite obviously and cut open the steak after to check. Totally over cooked to the point it was super chewy and on a side note tasteless. Mine was the arrachera al chimichurri. No chimichurri was anywhere near that steak. I waited to tell a waiter but nobody every came back to our table to ask us how things were going. So I went inside to tell someone and the waiter seemed confused and angry that I was unhappy about the steak as though they had not made a mistake overcooking it. No matter, they eventually said they would make a new one. My new steak arrived approximetly 15-20 mins later. You can watch them grill from our seat right across. They were not making it. Needless to say this steak was not even cooked at all!!! To the point that it was literally going to make me throw up in my mouth. I would have had them cook it more but we had an event to be in Playa del Carmen for so we had to get going. I told the waiter and he shrugged I feel like if the owner or a manager had been around, I would have been able to resolve this. The person grilling this night, I had never seen before, must have been inexperienced with grill temps and times for cooking steak to order. Not that age matters too much but he was a very young man. Maybe 18 at most. I remember when the owner grilled or at least supervised the grill. It would have been nice to be treated like a valued customer and apologized to for the inconvenience."

"I do not typically write restaurant reviews, but I make an exception when I come across a restaurant while traveling that I particularly enjoyed and don't feel is getting the full recognition that it deserves from a ratings or placement perspective.El Palomar was my family's favorite restaurant on our recent trip to Cozumel. We liked it so much that we ate there twice. Our group consisted of four adults and four kids (ages 2 through 8).Highlights (in no particular order):- The restaurant is located in a historical building on the north end of "downtown", across from the water. The patina of the interior and indoor/outdoor feel that the open doors and windows provide gives the place a Havana-type feel.- El Palomar has a legitimate bar... the best selection and cocktail making that I saw on our trip. There is a "walk-up" area where the bar opens to the sidewalk where you can see folks, still in their swimsuits, stopping by for a quick drink before heading back home.- The food was excellent. We enjoyed everything that we ordered on both visits, but the standouts were: - Lobster or (Fish) Catch of the Day with Guajillo Sauce: "sauce" isn't 100% accurate, it is more like a baste used to coat the lobster while cooking. - Beef Tips: small cubes of tender beef in a smoky pasilla pepper sauce w/ a side of tortillas. - Fish Wings: Bone-in sections of Snapper prepared like a Buffalo wing (if you think of how a fish is typically filleted, it is the section of meat nearest the gills/fins that doesn't make it into the fillet).- Oscar and the rest of the staff were extremely friendly and took great care of us.Notes:- While the waiter warned that the guajillo / pasilla / chipotle sauces and other salsas were a little spicy, we didn't find any of them to be too spicy for our kids. If you are sensitive to spicy foods, I wouldn't worry.- The mosquitoes were bad across the island during our trip. Due to the open indoor/outdoor nature of the restaurant, I would recommend taking bug spray if you are sensitive to bites or the mosquitoes tend to like you.Note to my Notes - neither points were unique to El Palomar, we had similar experiences elsewhere, but wanted to mention it for folks who have never been to the island."
