"Very good food, at very good prices and very cheerful and friendly staff. My husband loved the atmosphere and the friendly chat with the locals. He had the steak pie, with homemade chips and peas. I had vegetable Lasagna with homemade chips and peas perhaps a little short on the vegetables but still of a very high standard with good flavour. The pie was crammed full with good quality steak which pleased my husband. In all a very good meal and excellent value for less than £18 and that included two mugs of coffee whilst we were waiting. An extra bonus was that Jones the Boats was just across the road from the Wellington and we could walk down to the canal with the dog. We met some interesting folk there, who were soon to be off on the boat, to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. I was almost tempted to join them but my husband wouldn`t come but then we had the dog. All in all we had a most enjoyable time and can certainly recommend the Duke of Wellington."

"Was a bit worried about booking Oscars cos of previous reviews. However the hotel offered an up-grade of £25 per head for a 2course dinner we decided to opt for it on the 2nd June! Totally glad we did also we were informed by staff that it was for 3courses. For our starters we had mixed olives (nicest olives I’ve ever eaten) sourdough flatbread with a cream cheese garlic an humous dip. For our main we opted for the pork loin with greens, duchess potatoes a cranberry apple jus with pearl onions. Oh my again gorgeous. For our desert hubby opted for ice-cream with a cold espresso coffee to pour over I had the mixed ice-cream granita bowl. Again excellent. Honestly didn’t think we’d finish it all (usually only have a main). Our wine was a ‘zilla’ £19 for bottle never heard of it b4 but was very quaffable. So total we paid out on 2nd was for the wine as had pre-booked paid for meal. Wish we’d also taken up the offer for breakfast deal via the hotel but I thought it was included in price when made booking through Booking.com"

"We visit Squire York almost every week at lunch time generally preferring the slightly quiter experience as we are both in our seventies. The food is extremely good value. Wine is sensibly priced; water provided uncomplainingly with ice and lemon as desired. Tables are clean, and chairs comfortable. Staff are courteous. We like the wide range of vegetables including potatoes three ways. Meat is excellent beef particularly tender and tasty, but all three offerings consistently good. Stuffing is tasty and yorkshire puds vary from crisp to soft ideal! We are glad that the little phase of cooking several of the veg in mustard has been dropped not every one's cup of tea but then the choice is so good that there are always plenty of alternatives. Just one small request: could you occasionally include parsnips preferably roasted? Also occasional choice of peas or sweet corn might be nice. The whole experience is highly recommended. Thanks to all the staff."

"…and we walk up the hill from the canal to find The Hand. Excellent service from a young enthusiastic Team. Gammon was very good, with chips, etc etc. Well run, clean House. Well worth the walk up the hill if you’re on the Canal. Very good"
